MotoeXotica Classic Cars has quite possibly the most desirable of all R107 SLs currently for sale in the U.S. in our showroom with our latest addition: a legally-imported 1985 Mercedes-Benz 500 SL.

Mercedes-Benz is one of the Big Three in Germany luxury car manufacturing. The SL class is one of 19 current mid-size models Mercedes-Benz current rolls out. The SL line has longevity; it is the second-longest series produced by M-B, starting in 1954 and still in production. It was code-named “R107” inside Mercedes during the production phase.

Due to federal fuel economy standards in other parts of the world, many other countries did not receive the 500 SL until a year after Europe. The 560 SL model was for sale in U.S., Japan, Canada and Australia. Though the 5.6 liter engine of the 560 SL was larger, the 500 SL is recorded as being the fastest SLs made. The 500 SL was published by Mercedes-Benz as having 0-60 mph times of 7.4 seconds for a top speed of 140 mph.

The SL combines the chassis of the W114 and the engines of the S class. The body itself was built with a newer paint system designed to improve protection from rust. The headlights in North American makes were paired and round compared to the square units in the rest of the world. Since the 500 SL was never imported to the U.S. market, this retains the more desirable Bosch one-piece headlights and chrome pinch bumpers.

This prime example of a usually unattainable, authentic European auto has found its way to MotoeXotica. We now have a legally imported ’85 Mercedes 500 SL hardtop convertible in stock. Atlantic Motorcars legally imported this European gray-market treasure in 1985, and this Benz met all required federal motor vehicle safety standards sold on a free and clear Missouri title.

The exterior is finished in a shiny Fire Engine Red, a classic color for any hot European roadster. There are no noticeable imperfections on this wonderful exterior paint. The color still appears like it just rolled off the factory line in Sindelifingen, Germany. The headlights are Bosch Euro one-piece with the factory optional wipers. SL stands for “super light,” and this 500 SL includes an aluminum front hood unlike the steel hood on U.S. models.

The fantastic small, chrome bumpers are the original European market bumpers which are far more aesthetically appealing than the U.S. market standards. We have an exterior-matching Signal Red hardtop and black cloth soft top — both original and both in excellent condition. Perhaps even more impressive is the authentic Mercedes-Benz rear rubber spoiler. This feature was only available on European market SLs. The star insignia is easily viewable on this Mercedes mark.

The interior is the finest conditioned, minimal-wear Palomino leather that compliments just how luxurious a vehicle this is. Even as is, this car would be astounding, but this 500 SL came with a bevy of factory options including: automatic climate control, anti-lock brakes, heated seats and rarely-seen kinder rear jump seat. If that weren’t enough to open your eyes, the hard-to-find correct 500 SL floor mats are snugly in place on the front floorboards. This car had only two previous owners, and original mileage is believed to be 68,000.

Payment Terms
Payment must be made by Cashiers Check, Money Orders or Wire Transfers payable in US Dollars. A Refundable deposit in the amount of $500.00 must be received within Twenty-Four(24)hours of the auctions close either by Master Card, Visa or PayPal. The buyer has seven(7) days from close of auction to inspect the vehicle. If the vehicle is not to your liking within this seven day inspection period then your deposit will be refunded 100%. If an inspection or decision takes longer then seven days and you find the vehicle not to your liking, your deposit will be forfeited and the car will be relisted. Final payment must be received within ten (10) days of the auction close. The refundable deposit only applies if you or an agent inspect said vehicle in St. Louis and find it not to your liking. I will not be responsible for buyers remorse or problems found to said vehicle once they have left my property. I am just being realistic, most of the cars I deal in are vintage and by their very nature will need TLC and some degree of attention sooner or later. These are not new cars and should not be treated as such. Once full payment has been received, Seller will fax a copy of clear title, Bill of sale, Buyers guide and additional DMV forms to the Buyer to sign and return via fax. The forms must be returned to the Seller prior to the shipment of said vehicle. Original paperwork will be sent to Buyer Via overnight mail seven(7)days from date of final payment. Transportation will commence only after final payment and signed documentation are received. Once a car is picked up from our premises, you will NOT be able to return the car.
