1962 Chevy Impala

History

The Chevrolet Impala is a full-size automobile built by the Chevrolet division of General Motors introduced for the 1958 model year. Deriving its name from the southern African antelope, Chevrolet's most expensive passenger model through 1965 had become the best-selling automobile in the United States, competing against the Ford Galaxie 500 and the Plymouth Fury when full-size models dominated the market. The Impala was distinguished for many years by its symmetrical triple taillights.

Ed Cole, Chevrolet's chief engineer in the late 1950s, defined the Impala as a "prestige car within the reach of the average American citizen."

The Impala was restyled on the GM B platform for the first time in 1961. The new body styling was more trim and boxy than the 1958–60 models. The 1962 model featured new "C" pillar styling for all models except the 4-door hardtop. Sport Coupe models now featured the "convertible roof" styling, shared with other GM "B" full-size hardtop coupes. This style proved extremely popular, and contributed to the desirability of the '62–'64 Impalas as collectibles.

Impalas again featured premium interior appointments, plusher seats, and more chrome trim outside, including a full-width aluminum-and-chrome panel to house the triple-unit taillight assembly. Super Sport (SS) models featured that panel in a special engine-turned aluminum, which was also used to fill the side moldings, making the SS more distinctive in appearance.

This car was purchased in 1993 with 18,796 original miles, by the most recent owner. The previous owner aimed to restore the car to exact factory specifications, and he did. The complete frame-off restoration was completed in 2000. This car is factory correct, even the numbers match on the spark plug wires! This car was transported with a trailer everywhere it went, and was stored in a heated building. This car is brand new from top to bottom!
