They were now showing up in everything from Ramblers to Chevrolets. Not to be left out, the Dodge division of Chrysler had an ace up its sleeve. Unlike the Chrysler 300 Series or the newly introduced Plymouth Fury, you could get the most powerful engine available in a Dodge for almost every body style. Introducing the Dodge D-500. The D-500 was a high-performance model derived from the standard Dodge but differing in many ways. It included a heavy duty suspension and other chassis upgrades from the New Yorker and Imperial lines, upgraded brakes, and a high-performance 361 CID 305HP wedge V8. A four-barrel carburetor pushed output to 305HP. “Lancer” was initially Dodge’s name for a pillarless “hardtop;” either coupe or sedan. “Royal” was a V-8-only series, the top of the line until “Custom Royal” upstaged it in 1955. “D-500” signified a more powerful hemi V-8. By 1958 D-500 had become the option code for a 361-cid, 305-hp wedge engine with single four-barrel carburetor. This car is a mid-range hardtop coupe with Dodge’s largest available engine in its next-to-most-powerful state of tune. Driving Impressions: "The late 50's MOPARS are special automobiles because they were the prequel to the muscle cars that were soon to be introduced in the 1960's. These cars were standard models that the factory hopped up with many performance upgrades at the end of the decade. The D-500 was a perfect example of new owners who purchased them to commute to work during the weekdays and then go to the drag strip to race on the weekends. This D-500 has the correct time period aftermarket tachometer installed on the dash and is a neat reminder of the weekend racers of the time."
