1962 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible

For consignment, a 1962 Cadillac Series 62 convertible, restored in 2010 and with about 15,000 miles since restoration.

Exterior
There's not much on this seventh generation car that isn't a striking design in some way.  From the sculpted grated grille with protruding headlights, to the fender ornaments, the curved windshield, the trunk lid which you could probably land a helicopter on, and the overall length, things are huge at a full 225 inches.  The taillights are found at the end of narrow fins, greatly reduced in ornamentation from the previous generation, but still a dominant feature of the back where the reverse lights are housed in chrome frames that look more like jet exhausts.  Vertical ribs go end to end on the latch panel in between these lights while a sculpted rear bumper sends points toward the ground almost mirroring the fins above.  The long doors become part of the straight shoulder line and above it, the white canvas top that shows some discoloration and slight hazing to the window, but remains fully intact.  Body colored wheel covers with chrome rims are a fantastic complement to the elegance of the car.  Imperfections include chips and scratches on the door and rocker panel.

Interior
Red and white continue with stylish design on the inside where white door panels with the driver's door shows some patina.  It's seen on the split bench, made of white leather, with some usage creasing and slight discoloration but in general, presenting in decent condition.  The rear bench is also white and surrounded by white as the sidewalls pick up where the door leaves off.  Long ashtrays and an electric window switch are onboard for the rear passengers.  The red steering wheel has silver accents and horn bar across its two spokes and leads to a dashboard consistent with 1960's trends, horizontal, square displays including the speedometer which sweeps across the top in front of brushed aluminum trim which also backs the AM radio and gauge like clock further right.  Red looped carpet covers the floor nicely and has vintage rubber mats on top to protect it.

Drivetrain
The engine bay is clean and houses a 390ci V8 rated at 325 horsepower and fed by a 4-barrel carburetor.  An A/C compressor and power brake booster take up free space in the engine bay while a Hydramatic 4-speed automatic transmission backs the powerplant and sends power to the rear wheels with 2.94 gears.  Power drum brakes are supplied at all four wheels.

Undercarriage
Plenty of Detroit steel underneath with a large X-frame dominating the real estate.  Some surface rust but not much and a drop of oil on the pan are noted.  Beyond that, basic driver quality undersides as the single exhaust meets a stock style muffler then travels a football field to exit via a chrome tip just prior to the rear bumper.  Coil spring suspension is found up front and a 4 link with coil springs is in the back.

Drive-Ability
We captain this true land yacht and steer this 19 footer out of the garage and onto the smooth waters of our tarmac test loop.  Cadillac wasn't kidding about the effortlessness of driving the 62, and people who reminisce about classic Cadillacs describe it as floating.  It's big and heavy but the 390 is up to the task and provides plenty of power for acceleration.  Tracking is great and handling is better than you'd expect with 75 series tires.  We note the radio does not work, the clock is not ticking, and the power antenna is not functioning.  All other operations work as intended.  While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

A visually striking car that's emblematic of a time when Cadillac was indeed the "Cadillac of cars" and were reserved for the well to do.  That's still the vibe you get from this car even though it's a classic and you can't help but be impressed with its design and how its mass is used to interpret those elements flawlessly.  A big cigar is not a requisite, but sure but sure would look good with this topless time capsule!
