A Brief History of the Ford Victoria
1955-1956 Crown Victoria
The Crown Victoria is the most prized hardtop model in the Victoria lineup. Constructed on the same wheelbase chassis using the same suspension components as non-Crowns, they also used the same engines and transmissions. Little change to the exterior was evident, other than the obvious “basket handle” trim atop the roof, additional chrome add-ons and emblem updates.
Inside, a hollow chrome strip mirrored the one on the roof, where owners could fold and store the removable snap-in “aluminized nylon” shade when the optional Plexiglas top was installed (making the car a Crown Victoria Skyliner) in the forward section of the roof. A few no-cost trimmings, including a rear armrest, suggested to prospective buyers that Crown models were more opulent.
Sales, and the directly affected production numbers, were considerably lower. In 1955, the final numbers for the Crown Victoria and glass-topped Skyliner were 33,165 and 1,999 respectively, while 1956 totals were significantly lower at 9,209 and 603 respectively. As a result, today 1955 V-8-equipped models are valued as high as $41,000 (steel roof) and $62,000 (Skyliner). The 1956 models run $2,000 to $6,000 more, respectively: they’re a full 20 percent more with the 312-cu.in. V-8.
