For consignment, a 1968 AMC AMX that has had extensive work performed over the past 14 years including body, paint, drivetrain and interior. It's been a show winner on numerous occasions and appears in the book, AMC Javelin, AMX, & Musclecar Restoration 1968-1974 by Scott Campbell of Medina, Ohio, who actually performed a good deal of restoration on this car.
Exterior
The car was stripped to bare metal in 2011, rusted metal was replaced with new, and a coat of the original color, Turbo Silver Metallic was applied along with Over the Top Go Package stripes in black. At this time, 15-inch chrome Magnum 500 wheels were fitted along with the correct AMC deep dish center caps and redline tires. A Trendsetter Sidewinder side exhaust system was added along with new hardware, mirrors, and rechromed bumper guards. Gaps are spot on, and the slim tail light flanks a black band with AMX spelled out at the point where the stripes terminate. The profile is unique with steeply leaning B-pillars that bleed into the rear haunches, while a long nose reaches back to the sloping windshield and there's simply no mistaking this car as any other except the longer Javelin. The paint, chrome, and stainless is near flawless on this car and we could not find any glaring imperfections.
Interior
The interior restoration took place in 2010 and covered nearly every inch of the inside. Door panels were replaced with 1969 style reproductions from Legendary interiors. The 1968 version with the arrow shaped wood applique was not available in reproduction, so we have the straight wood panel in a red vinyl background. Step over new sill plates to find Legendary was also used for the seat covers of the only two seats in the car, buckets with textures inserts. The 3 spoke wood grain steering wheel has a crack in its base and is mounted on a tilt column now and leads to the red dashboard with black faced gauges from 1970. A woodgrain applique backed center stack houses more gauges of the optional Rally Package and the AMX numbered plate. Grains of the wood applique pick up again on the center console, also restored, and home to the trim metal shifter emerging from the "shift command" indicator plate, then on to the lid of the storage bin. Red looped carpet covers the floor with bright cleanliness and is also found in the rear of the car where the backseats would normally be found. The ribbed headliner which completes the fully red interior, is in great condition.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is the gleaming 390ci V8, rated at 315 horsepower and equipped with an Edelbrock R4B intake manifold under an Edelbrock 650cfm 4-barrel carburetor. Setting the car into motion is a Borg Warner M12 3-speed automatic transmission which sends power to the rear equipped with AMC Twin Grip and 3.15 gears. Power brakes are onboard with discs in front and drums in the back and much of it is new as of 2019 including wheel cylinders, rotors, drums, pads, and shoes. Lines, hoses, and a master cylinder were put in in 2011 along with a new wiring harness.
Undercarriage
The car has been driven less than 500 miles since the restoration was completed in 2020, and it shows underneath which is nearly spotless. Under here, the Moser axles, pitman arm, and rear leaf springs are newer. Coil springs are up front. There's no surface rust or oil leaks, no dirt, and no grease built up anywhere. If not for some minor dust and road splash and basic patina, the underside would rival day one off the assembly line. As noted, the exhaust leaves the engine and immediately heads to the sides where side pipes send the spent gas along their way down the rocker panel, guarded by and dressed up with the louvered heat shields.
Drive-Ability
The '68 fired right up and on the test loop was a pleasure to drive. This car offers up lots of interior room, while maintaining its sportiness and somewhat compact size. Smooth acceleration, good handling, solid stopping and quiet shifting for the automatic were experienced. All functions worked as designed in this silver bullet. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
An inordinate amount of time, energy, love, and money went into sorting this AMX out and enhancing one of the most desirable cars from AMC ever to be produced. Once unsung heroes, AMX's are quickly becoming some of the hottest American collectibles in the market, and it only took 56 years!
