This 1969 Mercury Cougar XR-7 is powered by a 428ci V8paired with a C-6 three-speed automatic transmission and is finished in light Ivy yellow paint over dark ivy gold leather bucket seats. Equipment includes XR-7Package, CJ428 – 4V engine, black vinyl roof, select-shift transmission, Ram-Air induction, Sports Console power steering, power disc brakes, hood lock pins, Wisper-Aire Conditioner, AM-FM Stereo Radio, Tinted glass, Deluxe seat and shoulder belts and lastly door edge guards.
The car was finished from the factory in light ivy yellow paint (2), and was repainted in the original color about 2 years ago. The front and rear bumpers and taillight bezels are rechromed, the vinyl roof and headliner were replaced at the same time. Magnum-style 15? wheels are mounted with BF Goodrich Radial TA 235/60/15 tires that have less than 1000 miles on them.
The leather bucket seats are trimmed in dark ivy gold, which is a dark green color with a color-coordinated dash pad and door panels. Woodgrain trim on the center stack extends to the center console and door panels, and amenities include air conditioning, an electric clock, a day/night rearview mirror, lap belts, a push-button AM/FM radio, Ford labeled green floormats.
The original 428ci V8 is equipped factory chrome valve covers and topped off with an original Ram-Air flapper element. The intake and exhaust manifolds are original. It has a new Holley on it for drivability but I have the original carb.
The C6 transmission is the correct type with R servo and cast-irontail housing.
The brakes have new calipers, front and rear hoses, wheel cylinders, brake booster, and master cylinder. The entire system was flushed out.
The carb, intake and exhaust manifolds are the numbers correct. The starter, motor mounts, water pump, 3 row radiator, hoses, fuel pump, and fuel line are new.
Decoding the trim tag reveals that the car is a 1969 Cougar, built in Los Angeles, XR-7 hardtop, with a 428-4V Ram-Air,
I purchased the car from a person in AZ who had owned it since 1993 and I believe it spent its entire time in the southwest. The prior owner stated that the engine was rebuilt when he got it.
The car was originally sold at Sierra -Lincoln Mercury in Fullerton CA. It was ordered on 1/16/69, built 1/23/29, and sold on 2/6/69.
I have done some minor changes to the car. It has ’69 Mach 1 exhaust tips on it. No, it's not an Eliminator those came out in April ’69, but I liked the way it looked with the stripe.
A few items that I would fix? The AC doesn’t work, it does have the compressor, condenser, the lines are intact and the fan works but the system would need going thru. The driver’s seat has a patch on the left shoulder area, but considering it’s 55 year old leather it looks great. The radio is the original but does not seem to work.
Documentation consists of Deluxe Marti Report, sales invoice, 2 build sheets and the “buck tag”
Although it is not installed, I have most pieces for the original AIR smog system; Thermoacter Tube Set, Carter 3 port smog cannister, and air pump.
They made 377 Hemi ‘Cuda automatics in 1970. In 1969 they produced 365 Cougars with a 428 with an automatic, of that number 304 were Eliminator cars. How many people added the extra cost of AC, XR-7 package, AM-FM stereo. As I am writing this up, I think that this car may be less than 10 ever made this well optioned. I realize that I don’t give this fine car the drivetime it deserves and that is why I am selling it.
