Hello friends, Buy Gone Classics is honored to present this rare 1971 Olds 442 convertible that's been treated to one of the most detailed frame-off restorations we've ever seen. This is an investment-grade muscle car that will stand tall in even the nicest of collections, and has the provenance to back it up.
We encourage buyers to view over 575 photos and nearly 90 minutes of high quality video below. Better yet, if you have a Smart TV, watch the videos on a big screen. Our goal is for our photos and videos to leave no stone left unturned, and offer a true condition report of this jaw-dropping 442. Our description below will be somewhat brief, but please don't hesitate to reach out to us with any questions; we're happy to help.
Prices on high quality '70-'72 442 convertibles remain strong, with recent examples selling for $93,500, $110,000, and $151,800. within the last 6 weeks or so. We believe our car's level of restoration, overall quality, and provenance exceeds the examples shown below:
The 442
This is one of just 1,304 442 convertibles built for 1971, with just a fraction of those left. The car is painted a rare '71-only color, Lime Green Metallic. Partnered with white stripes, white top, and pearl white interior, it's an incredibly striking combination.
This car has never had rust, or been in an accident requiring bodywork. The restoration photos below help outline how incredible clean this car was to begin with, as evidenced by its original floors, trunk pan, and all original, rust free body panels still intact. Sincerely, look at how smooth the frame and suspension components are on this car; it's truly a work of art.
This 442 was purchased in Fall, 1971, and kept in the owner's family until 2005 or so. The original owner in Nashville, TN kept detailed records, so all of the car's sales paperwork, window sticker, Protect O Plate, and dealer inspection sticker were all kept in a folder. Incredibly, the owner also kept detailed service records, outlining every fill-up of gas and maintenance until the car was well into the 95,000 mile range. With only 108,000 total miles on the car, it's seen under 10,000 miles in the last 25-30 years. We also have multiple original Broadcast Sheets, and some registration receipts for this 442, as well. The level of provenance included with this car is absolutely remarkable.
The engine, transmission, and rear axle are all original, born-with components to this car, and confirmed in the photos below. The engine has been warmed up by famed Oldsmobile builder, Mondello Performance, however. Expect this car to perform like, or even better than a '70 W-machine, my friends.
After several years of ownership, renowned Oldsmobile restorer, Jason Stritesky "Strits", made the decision to offer this special 442 convertible a restoration with a level of detail not often seen in the muscle car world. The results of his spectacular frame-off endeavor netted results folks would expect from a car of this quality: 989/1,000 at the Oldsmobile Nationals, Concours Gold top honors at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals, and 1st Prize with the prestigious Antique Automobile Club of America, where Strits and family attended their national gala to accept his award. After its sale by Strits in 2016, the car has been in the same collection since our recent purchase.
Body panel fit and finish is top notch on this 442. Great lengths went into replating original pieces, mimicking caulk colors, and trunk spatter paint pattern. Notice the detailed plating of small hardware, polishing trim & re-chroming the original GM bumpers along with the original "flat" style chrome bolts, and using survivor photos and the assembly manual as a template to lay out the unique 442 side stripes correctly. Paying homage to the stunning quality of this car to begin with, Strits made the decision to use the original glass in this car, its gorgeous original dash, and even the interior carpet. YES, the carpet in this car is original GM. The 5 Goodyear G70's are NEW, with less than 20 miles or so on them. The details on this one are sincerely endless...
Because of the amount of time this vehicle sits, though, please know that there are a few light drips when the car sits. We noticed some light oil seepage occurring. We also noted some staining of the engine block paint, and experienced some light valve cover leakage while driving. We haven't taken any corrective measures, as many times, these problems can self-correct if a vehicle is driven more often.
**Please note that the rear Hippodrome license plate will be included with the sale, but the front Oldsmobile plate will not. Thank you for understanding.**
