Up for sale is a 1973 Triumph Stag with a Triumph 3.0L V8 engine and a rare 4-speed "J" type manual transmission with working overdrive. I've owned this car since 1982 when I purchased the car with 61,429 miles on it. In 1986, the engine was replaced with a new one from England, and has less than 1000 miles on it since then (66,225 miles on the car as of July 2024). This car has always been kept in a heated garage.
The body is straight and in excellent condition, paint excellent and rust free. The car was originally brown - I had the car repainted Carmine. It is a careful quality professional repaint properly done with all trim and weatherstripping removed prior to painting. Door jambs, doors, trunk lid, and hood openings are Carmine. I have a 1-gallon paint can of the Carmine paint from when the paint job was done, in case touch-ups are ever needed. The convertible top is beige and is mechanically sound, cosmetically good but not perfect (a little wrinkled..it has been sitting folded up for a while..nothing major).
The car starts quickly with full choke, drives well and was last Pennsylvania state inspected in 2016. On April 13th of 2016, I drove the car 190 miles up and down the back roads and interstate highways through the Appalachian Mountains of Pennsylvania with the temperature gauge in the center area at all times.
Except for the clock all gauges work. The added on oil pressure gauge under the left side of the dashboard shows a steady 44 psi @ 3000 RPMs. Driving at 60 miles per hour and engaging overdrive will drop engine speed by 600 RPMs from 3000 to 2400. The transmission shifts well (synchronizers were replaced).
The A/C was repaired and working in 2010 but is not working today. The compressor clutch was not locked up in 2016 and could be spun by hand - I haven't checked since then. I believe everything else to be in working order.
A number of repairs done throughout the years, in no particular order:
3.0L V8 engine
Transmission synchronizers, seals, etc.
Alternator
Fuel tank
Radiator/fan shroud (Glenn Merrell)
Power steering rack assembly
4 Michelin tires (Michelin XVS 185/70 x 14 with ~2000 miles on them)
2 lower ball joints
Front brake pads and seals
3 drive shaft U-joints
Stainless steel exhaust system (Rimmer)
Petronix ignition module
Spin on oil filter
Clutch master cylinder
Clutch slave cylinder kit
Rebuilt carburetors (09/2015, just cleaned last month)
Interstate battery (09/2015)
Belts, hoses, spark plugs, wires, air filter, oil filter, etc.
Radiator cleaned and rebuilt
Other details:
Bumpers...good original condition, not perfect (some pitting)
Carpeting...original with minor wear in the front
Sun visors...intact but showing their age
Gear shifter boot has a minor tear
The interior trim, dash, door panels, wood trim, gauges, headliner of the hardtop, console, steering wheel, all very nice
The glass is good, no cracks, stars, or chips.
The outside door handles have minor pitting in the chrome and the black plastic piece that you pull with your fingers is grayish
Chrome trim molding across the bottom of the hardtop rear window is crinkled slightly (not terrible)
The radio is missing
There is a whine in the rear on acceleration and I suspect the ring gear and pinion. It goes away when you lift off the throttle or hold a steady speed.
It has the Triumph twitch under hard acceleration. I have been told a good Triumph mechanic can make this go away.
The foam inside the driver's seat backrest is crumbly and will need replacing soon.
I have with the car:
Pennsylvania, US title from 1982
Stag factory repair operation manual (service manual)
Stag parts catalog
20+ years of Triumph Stag News (1995-)
Some but not all parts and repair invoices going back to 1987
