For consignment, a 1970 Oldsmobile 442 hardtop with a numbers matching drivetrain that includes the engine and transmission. If you have a Chilton's manual for 1970-1987 Cutlass RWD, this car is on the cover of the book as it was selected by Chilton after it had appeared and won several car shows.
Exterior
The Aegean sea is an arm of the Mediterranean and forms a bay where beautiful blue water exists off the coast of Greece, and it is for this body of water that Aegean Aqua was selected as the name of the paint that covers this car in two stage beauty. It is, of course, accented by some white highlights as a 442 and that includes white stripes on the W25 twin raised hood scoops, a thin white stripe that rides over the wheel openings and goes from the nose to the tail, and a bright white vinyl top that underlines the C-pillar just over slight fender bulges in the rear. Pairings are common on the car and includes twin headlights on each side, two hood pins, the rectangular hood scoops, a split grille with mirror image sides, sport mirrors color keyed to the body, taillights that have twin vertical bars, and twin trumpet exhaust tips. The chrome and paint on this car are nearly impeccable are the glass, top, and panel gaps. 14-inch Oldsmobile Super Stock II wheels are clean and wear 225/70R14 tires with an early 2020 manufacturing date. The only imperfection we note is a small scratch on the rocker panel below a door. As Porky Pig would say, that's all, folks!
Interior
Ivory is the color of choice on the interior, and it starts with vinyl door panels that show a bit of patina and some uneven coloring but remain handsome with a burlwood wood grain strip and carpeted lowers. Front bucket seats utilize the ivory vinyl in an elegant design with button backs and tuck and roll patterning over smooth panels. Again, a touch of patina with some minor creases are noted on the driver's seat but no tears or wear through. The rear seats mirror the design and carry on the door pattern on the side walls, adding an ashtray to the side armrests. An X is formed by the spokes of the sport steering wheel and it leads to a very simple gauge cluster embedded on burlwood wood grain trim and includes a clock in the center of the tachometer is a clever bit of dual purpose usage. Burlwood applique covers the lower dash as well which houses the climate controls and the AM/FM radio. In the center console, the famed Dual Gate shifter, often called "his and hers" and allows for manual and automatic operation, topped by a pewter knobbed Hurst stick. Black loop carpet is on the floor protected by vintage looking rubber mats that accommodate the high beam foot switch. The ivory headliner is in very good condition and the trunk is relatively clean, lined with a gray mat and housing a spare on a Super Stock wheel.
Drivetrain
Twist the pins and pop the hood and we're impressed with the very clean numbers matching 455ci V8 with a W30 cam inside and a Holley 4-barrel carburetor on top. The original Rochester Quadrajet will come with the car. Grabbing that power and sending it to the rear 12 bolt is the numbers matching TH400 3-speed automatic transmission. Brakes on board are drums at each corner. UndercarriageSuper clean on the bottom side with a lack of surface rust, road dirt, grease build up, and errant fluids. Suspension consists of coil springs up front and a 4 link with coil springs in the back. The dual exhaust encounters a pair of stainless Borla mufflers before trumpeting out the back.
Drive-Ability
442 is an iconic number, but so is 455, and the big heart of this classic Olds roared to life in pure muscle car oratory delight. We cruised it around the test loop carefully to check each function available on the car while enjoying healthy acceleration, good handling, crisp shifting, and decent braking. The tach and clock combo was not functioning and the A/C was inoperable. Beyond that, everything is in order. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
As one of the most collectible A-bodies to ever leave the GM assembly plant, the 442 is a highly prized possession and to have one that's not only numbers matching, but the literal poster car for the repair manual is a rare find indeed. A photo album of the restoration and paperwork will accompany the car so the new owner can be the steward of its history. If you're in the market for a collector grade 442, take a swim in the Aegean beauty.
