1964 Chevrolet K10

In the 1960s, you could buy your light-duty Chevrolet truck in one of two ways- the rear wheel drive C10, or the four wheel drive K10. Although in recent years, the C10 has gained popularity in the hot rodding world, the far more capable K10 has always been popular amongst a dedicated group of enthusiasts and is far more capable in the real world. This 1964 Chevrolet K10 is a stunning example that has been treated to a comprehensive restoration, where it was brought to showroom standards, and then upgraded to make it a fantastic driver as well.

Finished in off white with white painted bumpers, grille and trim, this truck was restored to what a real work truck in the period would look like- save for the modern tires. Restored by Metal Works Speed Shop in Eugene, OR in 2019, this truck has been completed to an exceptionally high standard and even the updated running gear looks like it could have been there from new. The restoration is extensively documented on the shop’s website and shows that when they first received this project, the truck was largely complete and in solid shape, but had seen far better days. The entire truck was taken apart, while the shop separated the body and chassis to do some minor rust repair and frame reinforcements. The cab was acid dipped and the bed was largely rebuilt with new Oak wood floors- although the driver’s side rear flare-side fender retains the signature spare tire holder. The team at Metal Works Speed Shop then spent considerable time blocking and sanding the truck prior to laying down the creamy white paint, to ensure a glasslike smooth finish on every panel. The interior was coated in Raptor texture black undercoating to keep the rust away while offering a clean look if anyone slides under the vehicle to take a look.

The interior is extremely simple in this truck, consisting of a single bench seat, a body color dashboard and partially-upholstered door cards. That being said, when it landed at Metal Works, the interior needed a serious overhaul- the bench seat had holes in the vinyl and the foam beneath was perished beyond use. So, as they did with the exterior of the truck, the seat came out and was taken down to its bare frame, straightened and repainted, while the hardware and sliders were all taken apart and professionally coated to ensure longevity. The seat was then wrapped in cream colored vinyl, with the correct pattern in the center prior to being returned to the interior. This truck was fitted from the factory with an auxiliary gauge pod, and a heater with defroster was refurbished to ensure proper functioning. Also, all new weather stripping was installed in the door frames, and the window surrounds were replaced with fresh rubber to make sure this truck keeps the heat in on cold mornings, and the moisture out if you end up in the rain.

Since many of these K10s were originally sold to companies as workhorses, fitting them with powerful engines wasn’t on the top of the priority list- which is why when this truck first arrived at Metal Works, it was fitted with its original inline-6 engine. Although in its time this engine was adequate, it isn’t nearly enough to keep up with today’s traffic. So, to solve this problem, a 350 ci V8 crate motor from GM was installed. Featuring electronic ignition, a 4bbl Holley carburetor with electric choke, an aluminum intake and center dump exhaust. This setup makes plenty of power and is a joy to drive when paired with the 4-speed manual, power steering and power brakes with front discs found in this truck. One thing that sets this build apart is that instead of covering the engine in chrome dress up trim, everything was finished in satin or black, making this look like what the truck came with from the factory which is a very cool touch. Additionally, Selectro HD front locking hubs have been fitted to this truck which look period correct and are simple to use.

Seeing a nicely restored K10 is a rarity- in fact, due to the type of work these trucks were pressed into when new, seeing any K10 is a special occasion. This is a stunning example that offers fantastic looks, but every element was clearly very thoroughly considered, to ensure that not only is it a looker, but that it drives well too. To carry out a restoration of this magnitude on your own truck would cost a tremendous amount of money and take lots of time, so if you have always wanted a classic 4 wheel drive Chevy in your collection, look no further.
