For consignment, a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro hardtop that underwent a full restoration from 1990 to 1994 and has been garage kept ever since. This car comes to our Hallowed Halls wearing the all important X77 trim tag code, denoting the Z28 performance package, however this car cannot be verified as a true Z28. Extensive work was done including the replacement of panels with GM stock, engine replacement and modification, and the interior received an overhaul as well. Our consignor states he's only put 500 miles on the car in the past 30 years, reserving it for car shows and short jaunts.
Exterior
Restoration included a solid coat of the car's original color, Cortez Silver and black Z28 stripes were added along with Z28 emblems on all four sides. An eggcrate grille comes to a gentle point between single headlights over fog lights and a chin spoiler. The cowl hood extends over the cowl vents and the polished window trim takes over from there and is in fine condition. Epic 1969 tail lights include three sections canted outward with the smooth center section housing the reverse light. Louvered vents in the rear quarter panel and a rear spoiler is there to suggest sportiness and speed. 15-inch Chevrolet Rally wheels are perfect for the car and letters out presentation on the staggered size tires adds to its racy profile. Imperfections include a scuff over a wheel opening, some bubbling low on the door, and some uneven body filler with cracking in one section.
Interior
Door panels and hardware were replaced during the restoration and look fantastic in stitched pattern black vinyl with manual locks and wind up windows. Smooth tall backed bucket seats occupy the front and include headrests and along with the rear bench seats, are in excellent condition. Speakers are mounted on the package shelf and rear side walls carry the door panel pattern. A 3 spoke steering wheel fronts a three gauge pods on the dash that includes a clock, and a column mounted tachometer with the shift light hidden under the cowl. Climate controls and a Kenwood AM/FM/CD player are towards the center and under it, the four gauge pod in the center console, showing some patina but fully intact. Further back we encounter a Hurst Competition Plus shifter in a woodgrain base, shifter pattern plate attached. Black loop carpet covers the floor in fine fashion and the headliner, though loose in some spots, is in good condition.
Drivetrain
A show worthy power plant is under the hood and although the air filter element reads 396, what we have here is a 402ci V8 that has been bored .060 over, balanced, and contains Speed Pro pistons, a Comp Cams Xtreme Energy 268 cam, ARP studded main caps, a cast steel crank, HD GM connecting rods, and Clevite bearings. Chrome valve covers, headers, and red ignition wires help dress up the engine bay. A Holley 750cfm 4-barrel carburetor fuels the 402 and a rebuilt and fortified date correct Muncie M21 four-speed manual transmission set the Camaro into motion. Power is sent to the rear 12 bolt with a consignor stated 3.73 gearing and Positraction. Our car is equipped with power disc brakes up front and power drums in the rear and most brake components and lines were replaced during the restoration including the master cylinder and wheel cylinders.
Undercarriage
Wow! Super clean underneath looking very much like a fresh restoration with no surface rust, fluid leaks, nor road dirt. The underside is uniformly satin black with the exception of the dual exhaust which travels from headers to two Super Turbo mufflers before exiting in downfacing pipes behind the rear wheels. Coil springs suspend the independent front end and 5 leaf leaf springs occupy the back.
Drive-Ability
A dry day afforded us the opportunity to take this lean and clean machine around the test loop and the big V8 sings through the dual exhaust and provides power on tap. The ride is firm and without the moans and squeaks that often accompany old cars and this one presents as fresh as it did in 1969 only with a stronger engine, better brakes, and a built transmission. With the exception of the horn, all functions operated as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
With so few miles on the excellent restoration, this car provides you with a turnkey experience and other than the date completed, a fresh car that's basically been in storage for 30 years. This one is more than ready to be enjoyed, shown, or added to a collection, even if it becomes a collection of one!
