This 2003 BMW 5-Series Touring is a sleek and powerful wagon with a black interior and silver exterior. It has a
5-speed manual transmission and 2.5L engine , with 6 cylinders and is left-hand drive. The car has a wide range of features including power windows, climate control, leather seats, and an AM/FM stereo.
The vehicle is equipped with safety features such as anti-lock brakes, driver and passenger airbags, and side airbags. It also has a range of other features including a sunroof, air conditioning, and alloy wheels. It has approximately 144,000 miles on the clock (probably a few more by the time you read this, as this is my daily right now). The VANOS system works great and is intact.
Keep in mind, this is a twenty-one-year old German car that has been in at least one accident (rear end) and was repaired. It shows plenty of signs of wear, signs of repair, and even some rust. The paint needs work, and it has small dents and dings. It needs some parts replaced and some TLC, but much of it is cosmetic and pretty easily addressed. For a full history of the car, please run a CARFAX or other report.
So, the issues I know about are all after a deep inspection by a BMW tech:
It has a small oil leak from the oil pan gasket, a small leak from the power steering hose, a vacuum leak somewhere that is causing the check engine light (the BMW tech said it doesn't affect how the car runs, but it's something that should be run down and replaced at some point). The sunroof works, believe it or not, but it needs some attention - there's a rubber/plastic cover that becomes displaced and I haven't had time to investigate it. It has dents and rust in some corners, passenger door has a good-sized dent in it (but it works fine). The rear hatch is intact and functional, though it does have some small signs of rust in a few corners (very common in the e39), and the hatch springs are a little weak; you need to open the hatch (it doesn't just come up) and sometimes it comes down on its own - they'll need to be replaced. The rear window hatch microswitch doesn't work. Interior trim/plastic is intact and is in great condition, and it doesn't seem to have any leaks.
All electronics seem to work, the headlights work, turn signals and brake lights work, the engine runs great, the AC works, power steering works with no noises or straining. Exhaust has a leak (some rust on the exhaust) and it sounds beefy, but a visit to an exhaust shop should get that squared away. One of the wheels has dent - there's a light vibration felt when you reach about 70mph on the highway that goes away once you get to about 75. I've consulted some wheel repair guys who have told me it's an easy enough thing to fix, and they can recondition the genuine BMW/BBS deep dish wheels to look like new.
The interior is very clean and in excellent condition. The driver's seat needs to be restitched in the center but otherwise the interior looks phenomenal - no cracks or rips. The headliner is still really good, though it will eventually need to be redone. Audio is provided by a new Eonon head unit (E39A12AS - the 8 core unit), and features FM radio, GPS/Nav, wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, access to Android apps, with USB ports threaded into the glove box (for charging, etc.) It was installed using the extremely high-quality CNC mounts from I-BUS so fitment is great. It's a significant upgrade to the OEM radio (which I replaced due to a bad screen). The speakers all seem to work, though the response range is definitely a little limited (they're old speakers), and I did have intentions to replace them all with a set of Bavsound speakers. Please note: The multifunction steering wheel is fully functional with this Eonon unit! It even connects to some of the ECU functionality like mileage, MPG, and open-door warnings.
The window tint is genuine XPEL XR Plus ceramic tint, professionally installed by an authorized and licensed installer ($1000 value - the receipt is in the glove box for any kind of warranty claim should it ever fail.) The ceramic tint keeps the interior of the car cool, protecting the leather and interior from UV and heat damage, plus the AC doesn't have to work as hard to cool down the car on hot days.
This car is my daily driver and is very reliable. It runs really, really well. It has a brand-new battery and new tires (the only things that needed immediate replacement when I originally picked it up.) Everything else is either cosmetic or something that can be done even as you drive it. It was intended as a project car, something that I could work on and improve on as I go, but I've had to shift focus and so it needs to go to another BMW enthusiast to complete.
I'm including:
- All the parts I've purchased to make repairs, including an oil pan gasket and drain plug gasket, genuine BMW rear sway bar and links, bushings, and more. (approximately $750 value)
- A Yakima roof rack (it's a simple round-bar Yakima set that is a few years old - maybe $300ish value?)
- BMW Shadowline window trim kit (interior and exterior). This converts the 'chrome' window trim to black. ($1000 value) I had every intention of converting this wagon to the Shadowline trim; again, no time for it, so instead of selling it separate I'm just including it to sweeten this deal.
This is a very rare car, especially with the 5-speed manual. It's super fun to drive, and with just a few upgrades (like new coilovers) and some TLC and elbow grease, could be really, really awesome (especially with the Shadowline trim pieces installed). Vehicle is being sold as-is, with no warranty expressed or implied. This is a project to get to 100% condition but it's a functional daily driver. Please inspect the photos carefully, read the description, and ask questions. I'm happy to take additional photos, as needed. If you need it shipped, you are responsible for making those arrangements but I'm happy to work with you and the shipper to arrange pickup, etc.
I will happily entertain offers, but please be reasonable when making an offer. No need to kick tires - if you're a BMW enthusiast you know what this is and what it's worth, especially if you take the time to get it to 100%. Some say that the e39 BMW is the perfect blend of form, function, and performance.
Good luck!
