The Atlas 750cc mill was expanded from the earlier Dominator 650cc by increasing the bore from 68mm to 73mm, and stroke stayed the same at 89 mm. Compression was reduced to 7.6:1 for a bike that could put out 49 BHP at 6,800 RPM. This 1965 Norton Atlas comes from the middle of the model's run, just two years before the also well received and equally iconic Norton Commando would debut with its forward-canted mill in 1967.
In 1965, Norton was still cutting its teeth within the AMC conglomerate fold joining Matchless and AJS, and one of the lasting benefits to this Atlas is that the powerful 750cc twin was nestled within the Matchless Featherbed frame and Roadholder front forks, a big help when it came to controlling the capable engine when it hit its high-speed vibrations. This iteration of the Norton twin still fed through a single Amal carb from the 3-gallon fuel tank. Unlike the twin disc brakes of the racing Atlases, this 1965 stock model has drums fore and aft. This extremely clean red 750cc twin 1965 Norton Atlas shows very few miles on the clock, and it is sure to be a welcome addition to any Norton or British bike collection.
