This stunning 1961 Porsche 356B Super 90 Cabriolet was recently awarded Best in Class honors against a stellar field at the prestigious Ironstone Concours ' Elegance in Murphys, California. A transitional model that superseded the legendary 356A, the 356B introduced a new front end styling treatment that foretold that of the 911, but as shocking as it was to many Porsche faithful, it was welcomed by the marketplace, which also approved of its all-new 1600cc Super 90 1600S-90 engine. A flat-4 designed to replace the Carrera Deluxe, it had been tested in the 1959 Nurburgring 1,000km, where it powered an engineering prototype to 13* overall in its very first race test.
After being maintained by its original owner until 2018 this 1961 Super 90 Cabriolet's next owner commissioned a complete refurbishing that began with disassembly and complete media blasting of the Reutter cabriolet coachwork. The car was then refinished in the original factory shade of Signal Red and fitted with a replacement black soft top. Additionally, the brightwork was re-chromed as necessary and the car was fitted with a new wiring harness. The car was delivered from the factory equipped with chromed side trim strips, dual side mirrors and twin fog lights mounted beneath the front bumper, all of which were retained as part of the restoration. Power comes from a Super 90 1600cc flat-4 engine fitted with Knecht air cleaners on the twin Solex carburetors and mated to Porsche's outstanding 4-speed manual transaxle. The car rides on Toyo Versado tires on the stock 15-inch wheels, which wear chromed trim rings and caps with Porsche crests.
The immaculate interior is a showpiece all its own. The seats, dash pad and other trim have been reupholstered in rich black leather. The cluster of DO instruments was rebuilt and includes a 6,000
RPM tachometer. Floor coverings are a combination of rubber mat and salt and pepper square-weave carpeting. This prize-winning 356B Super 90 Cabriolet comes with a car cover, chromed luggage rack, coco mats, black boot cover, reference manuals and the all-important Porsche Certificate of authenticity.
