Cruisin Classics is excited to offer to you this 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A. All of you MOPAR fans are going to really dig this rare and special car! The Challenger T/A was a special model only available in 1970 and only 2,399 were made. To race in the Sports Car Club of America Trans American Sedan Championship, Dodge built a homologous street version of it's race car and called it the Challenger T/A (much like the Cuda AAR). These T/A's are definitely not your average Challenger – they came equipped with specially designed 340ci blocks topped with three 2-barrel carburetors, hinged matte black fiberglass hoods with air scoops and hood pins, special Rallye suspension, "megaphone" exhaust outlets ahead of the rear wheels, staggered front/rear tire sizes (a first for a stock American muscle car), fiberglass rear ducktail spoilers, front spoilers, and thick dual side stripes & bold ID graphics. This particular T/A comes to us dressed in a good driver quality respray of it's original color of Top Banana. The Banana yellow really pops when contrasted by the matte black hood, longitudinal black stripes, black spoilers, and blacked out headlight and taillight panels. Adding some sparkle to the look are gleaming chrome bumpers, bright headlight bezels and grille surround, bright window trim and drip rail, chrome exhaust tips, and the flip-open fuel door. The aggressive raked stance of this Challenger makes it look like it's going fast while sitting still, and that is courtesy of the staggered size wheels and tires. It rides on Chrysler Rallye wheels with beauty rings (15X7 front, 15X8 rear) wrapped in white-letter BF Goodrich Radial T/A's (235/60/15 front, 255/60/15 rear).
Undo the pins and lift the lightweight hood to reveal a tidy yellow engine bay with an orange 340ci V-8 block at the center. This block is not numbers matching, but it is a true T/A block (see the photo of the casting number with "TA"in it) dated 1/6/70, just two months before the car was built – it doesn't get much more "era-correct" than that. The block is topped with a correct Chrysler/Edelbrock Intake, correct "J" heads, three 2-barrel reproduction Holley carburetors spec'd for a 1970 340+6 with automatic transmission, orange valve covers, and an orange 6-pack air cleaner with call-out sticker. Other highlights under the hood include power steering, a 26" radiator, and the original trim tag. The 340 V-8 is mated up to a 727 Torqueflite automatic that puts power to the pavement via an 8 3/4 " rear end with 3.55:1 gears. Stopping power comes courtesy of power front disc and rear drum brakes. Exhaust flows through factory high performance cast manifolds, newer pipes and mufflers, and exits ahead of the rear wheels with an aggressive growl.
Open the drivers door to see a good looking black OEM interior illuminated by a working dome light. The long black door panels are in good condition and the drivers door offers an interior mirror toggle. The front seats are high-back vinyl buckets (as originally ordered) and they look like they may be original to the car. The drivers seat shows some wear, splitting on some seams, and a few previous repairs, while the passenger seat shows only light wear and a couple loose threads. The bench seat in the rear looks the same age but shows no real signs of wear. Between the front buckets is a center console with a storage box, woodgrain trim, and a Slap-Stik shifter for the automatic transmission. The crack-free black dash is home to a standard factory gauge cluster (Rallye cluster was an option not chosen) with a 120mph speedometer, working gauges for gas, temp, and alt, and an analog clock (inop.). The odometer reads 54,211 miles and the title states those miles are actual. Also on the dash are controls for the working 2-speed wipers, what appears to be the original AM radio (works fine), and controls for the working heat and fan. Mounted under the dash is an Autometer oil pressure gauge, just to keep an eye on things. Directly ahead of the driver is a black 3-spoke steering wheel with a working horn. Underfoot you'll find nice black carpet with carpeted T/A logo floormats while overhead is a tight black vinyl headliner. Around back is an empty trunk with just a vinyl mat and a jacking instructions sticker under the decklid.
If you're a muscle car enthusiast, and especially if you're a Mopar fan, you'll immediately recognize the rarity and desirability of this '70 Challenger T/A. With less than 2,400 made and far less than that still on the road, the chances of even seeing a T/A are slim – let alone having the opportunity to make one your own! Give our friendly staff a call today - don't let this chance to own a real piece of muscle car history pass you by!
