1948 PACKARD Super Eight Victoria
America's first ALL NEW post-war convertible. Designed from the ground up and built on Packard's 'Million Dollar Chassis', the '48 Super Eight Victoria won the Fashion Car Of The Year Gold Medal from the NY Fashion Academy. The 'Streamline Moderne' design was a departure from Packard's pre-war cars, with no running boards, and smooth aerodynamic lines. It sported WWll style aircraft inspired 'flight glow' gauges, power top, power seat, power windows and a dream-like ride. The car was an instant hit, and 1948 proved to be Packard's 2nd biggest selling year to date. Only 4,750 of this model were made, and there are few left on the road, especially in this car's condition. It is an extremely early car, the 653rd built, and has the rare slide vent controls, Cusom Eight glovebox door, and a unique interior.
I purchased this Packard about 12 years ago, locked away in storage in a Jersey Shore garage. The man who loved and restored this car in the year 2000 had passed, and his widow held on to it for a few years, before deciding it was time to find her a new home. The car was covered and quite dusty, but the restoration work the owner had done was all there. Work done in 2000 was new paint, tires, interior, chrome, Haartz top, and more. A ruby-like gem waiting to be polished. I had to drain the gas, install a new fuel pump, clean the points, and source a new 6v battery, and she fired right up! That first drive was amazing.
I have since put less than 1000 miles on her. More recent work I have done was a fresh re- chroming (Frankford Plating - Philly, PA); hydraulic top mechanism rebuilt (Hydro Electric - Florida); 5 new Dual 90 whitewalls about 50 miles ago; and a second battery about 3 years ago...plus various other maintenance items along the way.The cars runs and drives beautifully. The W-9 manual transmission shifts nicely, and the overdrive allows her to cruise on the highay effortlessly. The power top, seat and windows work well. The interior is beautiful. The Haartz cloth top and frame are gorgeous. The chrome is great. The paint is deep and shines beautifully though does have a few nicks and scuffs. It has a spare tire fill valve option, above the rear bumper, which allowed the driver to remain in the car while the gas attendant checked the spare tire without opening the trunk. The gas fill whistle to prevent overfill, a Packard innovation, works perfectly.
This rare and beautiful Packard is always a hit and turns heads wherever she goes. You will never see another one at a show or cruise night. I have a binder full of paperwork, maintenance receipts, pictures, and history of this car which I can trace back to the original owner, a doctor who ordered her new in Philadelphia. It's time for me to let another lucky owner / caretaker enjoy this classic automobile.
