This 1998 VW new Beetle is still in solid condition despite its age and mileage. Fully functional/drivable. The car has never been in a major accident or suffered any extreme damage such as from flooding. However, the check engine light for a small leak in the turbo charger caused the car to fail its smog check (why its registered as PNO). The car still drives well despite the check engine light and still gets roughly 40-45 miles per gallon in its current condition (although acceleration is worse due to the turbo charger issues). Currently the car battery is dead and therefore the car is unable to start without a push start or jump start.
Other issues:
Slow continuous oil leak (10+ years, topping off the oil every 2-6 months was effective)
Plastic paneling within the car deteriorating (passenger side panels detached)
Speakers in the back do not work.
AC is not operational (15+ years)
Damage to exterior paint from years of sun exposure.
Tires are only 2.5 years old. Yearly maintenance was performed up until 2024.
The car should be easy to bring back to CA smog standards based on my experience with this check engine light issue in the past. (potentially need to replace a valve and some old hoses)
Overall has been a phenomenal and reliable car, am selling as a new car was purchased. Selling as PNO due to not willing to make the necessary repairs to pass the smog test.
