1986 saw a number of major changes and available options for the Vanagon, such as a larger displacement engine, available Syncro all wheel drive, and upgraded rectangular headlights.
We're excited to offer this rad 1986 Westfalia Vanagon, which is all set for long road trips, including exploring off paved roads. This Vanagon boasts a common engine conversion in the form of a 2.5 Liter Subaru Flat-4 engine, upgraded suspension, solar panels, and a host of other great upgrades. What better place to perform the upgrades and engine swap than a Volkswagen Vanagon specialist OutWesty Campervans? OutWesty Campervans performed the upgrades and maintenance, making sure that it's all dialed in for road trips and long weekends. The vehicle you see here is a 1986 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia finished in Pastel White over a brown interior, and currently showing approximately 193,537 miles on the mechanical odometer.

The exterior is finished in a pretty rad color combination, which includes gold, red, and brown horizontal stripes over the Pastel White paint, and a white pop-top. The paint is in great condition showing even gloss and depth. The body panels line up as they should, and lights and lenses are in great condition. As an 86 model year, this Vanagon has the rectangular headlights in the grille rather than the round lights in the earlier Vanagon. You'll notice a spare tire carrier has been added to the rear of the van, and just below that is a tow hitch. The combination of 15" wheels wrapped in Geolandar All-Terrain tires gives the van a more rugged look, as well as more confidence in a variety of terrain.

Inside this Westy is an interior that is in very nice condition throughout, which is important if you are using it as it was intended. The pop-top netting and canvas is in great condition and the pop-top features struts to make it easier to get the top up. The interior trim itself is in great condition, which is nice to see as it's common for many of the bits to warp or show wear over time. A pair of swivel seats at the front makes the interior space more versatile, for living in the van for short or long periods of time. Upgrades to the interior include an aftermarket refrigerator, Blaupunkt stereo, modern power ports, LED lights, and an auxiliary battery which connects to the solar panels. The usual storage drawers, cabinets, and cubbies are still present and still very much helpful when taking a trip in a van like this.

Another very helpful item that this van has, which makes travel even better, is a Subaru 2.5 Liter Flat-4 engine. Despite the 1986 Vanagon rolling off the assembly line with a 95 horsepower 2.1 Liter Flat-4 engine, which was an upgrade from the early Vanagons, the 2.5 Liter Subaru engine provides more power, responsiveness, and is easier to find parts for should you need them. The engine swap is very nicely done, and tidy. The engine is mated to the stock 4-speed manual transmission.

1986 was a year of changes for the Vanagon, however the soul of the vehicle remained the same from the start to the end of production. The Vanagon you see here is an awesome example of a great vehicle with a cult following. Such a large following is no surprise if you're one of the fortunate folks who have owned or driven a Vanagon. Please call if interested or e-mail with specific questions. Thanks for looking.

About Garage Kept Motors

Garage Kept Motors, LLC specializes in classic and specialty online auto sales.

For our consignors, we are the only auto brokers that offer a Transparent Sale Disclosure. This means, when a car sells, we provide an exact copy of the Bill of Sale. We do this so our clients know exactly who bought their car, where it went, and most importantly how much we sold it for. No funny business.

For our buyers, our vehicles are listed on the Internet, with over 100 photos, including undercarriage pictures, and walk-around videos of the vehicles running plus a narrative-style write-up of the cars history and features. Our international exposure allows us to sell cars across the globe, and we sell a majority of them out of state and overseas. We deliver honesty and consistency in our photos and descriptions, a “no surprise” approach, so buyers, both near and far, can invest with confidence sight unseen. We are not a gallery. Vehicles can be seen locally by appointment as potential buyers are given our undivided attention.
