For consignment, a 1986 Ford Mustang SVO with a recent respray in original color, newer tires, and showing 30,894 unverifiable miles due to exemption. These are special cars, finally realizing their value in the marketplace and with less than 10,000 total built, good ones are increasingly rare.
Exterior
The respray of Silver Metallic paint was done right and it's gleaming on this car which immediately gets the attention of car people. While not the fastest Mustang ever produced, there is no doubt that the offset hood scoop is one of the greatest design choices ever made by Foxbody artisans that still raises eyebrows today. Combined with the 16-inch SVO specific wheels and an epic biplane rear spoiler set this apart from all other Mustangs. Aero headlights replace the inset lights mid 1985 and add to the Euro flare of this American pony car. Sail panels behind the quarter panels, rear wheel spats, and SVO emblems on the side are all icing on the cake on this clean and unmarred car.
Interior
The stock interior begins with beautiful cloth and vinyl gray doors augmented by black colored controls and piping. Mixed shades of gray adorn the bolstered sport bucket seats and they are in great shape, as are the rear seats that display an 80's inspired asymmetrical stitched panel design. An SVO branded sport steering wheel is simple and button free and a shifter with matching leather boot is well within reach of your right hand. The gauge cluster is surrounded by a gray plastic panel that has a few nicks but the gauge looks great and conveys all the essential information in a simple layout. A gray panel above the glovebox could also use a refinishing but still presents well. Climate controls and an AM/FM/Cassette player are centered over a fog light toggle and fuel selection toggle which adjusts the spark advance according to octane, an important consideration for the turbocharger and its psi limits. Low pile gray carpet covers the floor and the back cargo area and is in fine condition while the charcoal cloth around the sunroof is clean and intact.
Drivetrain
Clean, driver quality conditions are found under the hood where the 2.3 liter EFI turbocharged and air to air intercooled inline 4 cylinder sits back behind the front axle for better handling, and it is rated at 200 horsepower. A Borg Warner T5 5-speed manual transmission is on tap and sends power to the Ford 7.5" rear with 3.73 gears and TracLoc. Four wheel power disc brakes were also added to the SVO from the factory as a performance upgrade over the GT's.
Undercarriage
There's significant surface rust on this driver quality underside but thankfully no oil leaks to speak of, although there is a light coating of residual oil on the pan. The single exhaust splits after the catalytic converter and enters two stock style mufflers before exiting via a straight pipe in the back. Suspension consists of coil springs up front and a 4 link with coil springs in the back.
Drive-Ability
What feels very much like a standard Foxbody on the inside has added excitement with a gaze over the hood where the raised back of that hood scoop makes a bold statement. The car handles great and we accelerated enough to allow the boost to take hold and while not blistering fast, does noticeably pull the car forward. A comfortable cab with these great seats and plenty of visibility with a satisfying view through the twin spoilers in back. All functions work with the exception of the air conditioning. Toggle the windows down and open the sunroof and let it flow! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
SVO Mustangs are universally loved. Even GM devotees have to acknowledge that this is a handsome car with some innovative and attractive race inspired additions to the interior, exterior, drivetrain, and suspension. Here's a nice, stock example in a great color waiting for you to "scoop" it up.
