Opportunities are never permanent, and for those people who understand the attraction of multi-carbureted muscle cars from the dawn of the 1960s, this true factory 1961 Chevrolet Impala SS Convertible should be of interest. There were just 456 Impala Super Sports built in 1961, a year when the country’s manufacturers had begun to seriously understand that American buyers wanted horsepower.
To that end, Chevrolet had already created a performance version of its early big-block V-8 engine. Displacing 348 CI, the design is referred to as the W-block based on its cylinder head configuration, but in the case of this Impala, it received Tri-Power induction. There are three Rochester 2-barrel carburetors beneath a large round air cleaner with offset snorkels (this example is factory original), and from here, the engine is backed by the 4-speed manual transmission, which still retains the original shifter. Owned by the same collector for over 20 years, this car was given a body-on restoration back in 2001, with paint refreshed to factory-correct Seamist Turquoise. White trim sideline inserts featuring the Impala and SS emblems, as well as fender skirts, paired rear antennas and special twin-paired rear bumper guards, are also here.
The correct two-tone Turquoise vinyl interior is inviting both front and back, as this car features a power convertible top, pushbutton AM radio with an upgraded FM tuner, a Sun knee-knocker tachometer, factory tissue dispenser and a consolette for the shifter. The correct Super Sport grab-handle dash is still here as well. Though the 1950s were in the rearview mirror by this time, this car wears classic bias-ply wide whitewall tires and the special Super Sport spinner wheel covers. While stripped-down versions of this model were making waves in racing, it was the stylish appointments of luxury and power that made these convertibles more popular to the street set. Top down to the vacation destination or simply making the circuit on Main Street let you see and be seen back then. Today, this car, scarce in production and desirable in options, should give its next owner thrills as well.
