For most of us Generation Xers, Cadillac’s final rear-drive Coupe and Sedan de Villes were a watershed model, the epitome of American luxury during the mid-1980s. This was the final full model year of the full-size, C-body rear-drive car. This example was made in May 1984 at General Motors’ factory in Detroit, Michigan.

Dressed in Cameo Ivory (code 50), the car’s paint and trim are in overall very good order. The chrome, wraparound bumpers fit tightly to the body and there’s a matching full vinyl roof. The cargo area is in decent order.

This Cadillac rolls on new whitewall tires, size 215/75R15 at every corner. Each tire is mounted on a steel wheel topped with a wire wheel cover. The wheel covers are in good, original condition.

Under the hood is a 4.1L V-8 engine, (code HT-4100). Backing this motor is a Turbo Hydramatic 200-4R four-speed automatic transmission and a 3.42:1 rear end. Driver convenience features are plentiful – electronic climate control, power recirculating ball steering, power disc/drum brakes, power windows, power locks, power sideview mirrors, rear defroster, tilt steering column and electronic level control.

Inside is a Light Yellow interior (code 504). The front bench seat is split 50/50 with a fold-down center armrest while the rear bench seat has its own fold-down center armrest. The front seat is in decent condition, as is the headliner. The contrasting tan, two-spoke steering wheel looks good and has a wrap of its own. The upright dashboard with a ribbon-style speedometer was synonymous with the mid-1980s. The inner door panels look great while the carpe is in fair order. A Delco-Bose AM/FM stereo with four speakers and a column-mounted shift lever round out the interior.

Nineteen eighty-four was essentially a re-run for the rear-wheel-drive Coupe de Ville and its four-door companion, the popular Sedan de Ville. It would also be the last time De Ville used the “V” emblem below the Cadillac crest, as all Cadillac models (except Cimarron) from 1985 on, would use the wreath and crest emblem - formerly a Fleetwood exclusive. Minor changes included new body-color side moldings and a revised exhaust system with a revamped catalytic converter. For 1984, sales figures show a total four-door production of 107,920 units, and an additional 50,840 two-door units (figures include de Ville and Fleetwood models).

Competition to this Cadillac in 1984 included: Audi’s 200, BMW’s 733i, Buick’s Electra Park Avenue, Chrysler’s Fifth Avenue, Mercedes-Benz’s 380SE and Oldsmobile’s 98 Regency Brougham.

If you’re looking for a full-size cruiser that’s a bit of a project while it coddles you and yours on every drive, check out this 1984 Sedan de Ville at Mission Classics.
