Despite being downsized after the full-size (B- and C-bodies) and the mid-size (A-bodies), the personal luxury E-bodies’ new look proved very popular with customers in 1979. By 1985, Eldorado sales accounted for about 25% for Cadillac’s total annual output.
The epitome of the sharply creased, long-hood, short-deck styling ethos, the Eldorado’s rear window dropped at almost a 90-degree angle, appearing from some perspectives that it actually went past 90o on its way to the meet the beltline.
To those who are unfamiliar with these cars, the biggest single surprise probably is that they are front-drive, not rear-drive.
This example was made in General Motors’ Linden, New Jersey factory (VIN code X) during May 1985. Dressed in Sable Black (code 19), with a matching padded vinyl half-roof. The car’s paint and trim are in overall very good condition. The large, chrome bumpers fit tightly to the body, the engine bay is quite tidy and the cargo space is clean.
This big two-door rolls on Vogue radials, size 215/65R15 at every corner. Each tire is mounted on a steering wheel, topped with a wire wheel cover. The wheel covers and tires are all in very good condition.
Under the hood is a 4.1L High Technology (code HT-4100) V-8 engine, one of five engines available. The motor is mated to a Turbo Hydramatic 325 four-speed automatic transmission with a 3.15:1 final drive ratio. Driver convenience features, as one would expect, is extensive on this Eldorado – air-conditioning, power steering, power disc brakes, cruise control, power windows, power locks, power sideview mirrors, power antenna, tilt and telescoping steering column and rear window defroster.
An extra feature is a Technalon2 Size-E car cover.
Inside, is the Dark Carmine leather interior (code 722) that is in overall very good order. Note the flat passenger floor, an uncommon site during an era of huge transmission tunnels consuming valuable interior space. The six-way power and split front bench seat has a fold-down center armrest.
The upholstery is in good condition considering it is almost 40 years old. The matching carpet and headliner look good, as does the matching dash and inner door panels, which are slathered in faux wood or added warmth. A two-spoke steering wheel and column-mounted shifter face the driver, with GM’s usual multi-function turn signal that was common during that period.
There are multiple digital readouts – the information center, the fuel gauge, the Delco-Bose AM/FM stereo, the factory climate control and the speedometer. The aforementioned stereo has a cassette deck, five-band graphic equalizer, multiple and extended range speakers.
Competition to this Eldorado in 1985 included Buick’s Electra Coupe and Riviera, Cadillac’s own Coupe de Ville, Mercedes-Benz’s 230 CE, Oldsmobile’s Toronado and 98 Regency Coupe and Saab’s 900 Coupe.
If you owned one of these before, your parents or grandparents did and you’ve always wanted one of your own (or another one), then don’t miss this opportunity at Mission Classics. Stop by our showroom today to check it out!
