Up for sale is my 1969 Sunbeam Alpine GT. I acquired this car a while back with the hopes of bringing back to its old glory and I've been able to make a reliable car out of it and made a few 50 mile round trips, this car can be driven home under its own steam.
Little history on these cars: Made by Rootes in England, very limited number were imported to the U.S. and around 3000 were sold, it's built on the Arrow platform where the Hillman Hunter was produced. Information is widely available on the web about these cars.
The last owner brought this car out of its 40 year hibernation and made it run, drive, stop and steer which took a lot of effort since parts were not easy to get, before buying the car I did my research and found reliable sources for parts both in England and the U.S. as I didn't want to be stuck without a good source for spares. Once I made sure that area was covered I made a deal with the seller, the previous owner was very upfront about the car and fully disclosed everything it will need and I took on the rest of the restoration, but in the midst of all that life got in the way and the most I was able to do was change the fluids and confirmed what I already knew about the car.
It runs and drives and I'm pretty much breaking even at this point, I would consider the possibility of trades but not projects as I don't have time due to my new job responsibilities. This has been a passion project in hopes of keeping this car from going down the same path of destruction as so many other. Non running projects of the same model go for about $3500 where the car will need everything and you'll be taking a chance in many aspects, in this instance good and bad are apparent fairly quickly. I will pass on the information I gathered on sources for parts and many alternative options readily available for factory replacement parts with cross references.
It has too many new parts along with pros and cons to list but I will do my best:
* GM style 100 amp alternator and it charges very well
* Complete dash
* All emblems and rare trim are there so no confusion as to what goes where
* Glass is in good shape with no cracks
* The gearbox has a slight grind in 2nd gear and pops out of 4th gear if you don't rest your hand on the shift lever, I've sourced a good used gearbox for around $500 but the car shifts fine and the clutch feels good and holds well
* Engine and carburetors have been rebuilt by the last owner
* There is an acceptable amount of rust for a British car but not total cancer, it can be lived with
* Wheels and tires are in good condition, specially with the rare wheels
* Title in hand with valid registration
* Keys are present and work
* All exterior lights work
* Electronic ignition in place of points
To schedule a viewing please call or text and I will do my best to accommodate. These cars are pretty common in the U.K. but stateside they have a small but loyal following and these don't come up for sale very often, at least not in running shape. The car does need work, for a 55 year old car it has held up pretty well but there is plenty to do, my intent was to have a rolling restoration as complete restorations are not my cup of tea.
The car starts every time and the engine is very strong, leak free without any overheating issues along with good oil pressure, last compression test revealed 160 psi of compression which is pretty good for this car, the 1725 engine is the same as what is found on Sunbeam Alpines. Please study the pictures, my intention is for the next owner to be able to enjoy this car and become part of the Rootes Group club. It will be a long time before another running and driving Alpine GT will come up for sale, most are non runners or parts cars.
If you're not local, starting, running and driving videos are available, this car can be driven off without issues.
Thanks for looking and let me know if you have any questions.
