Hello friends, Buy Gone Classics is incredibly excited, and honored to offer this documented, RARE, M22 "Rock Crusher" 4-speed equipped, 1971 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28. This Camaro has been well-built, and wears its Z/28 badges with pride. Just listen to this car's angry idle in the videos below; it's pure Z/28 FUN.

We encourage buyers to view over 275 photos and 10 high quality videos below. They leave no stone left unturned, and offer a true condition report of this gorgeous 2nd generation Camaro. Our description below will be somewhat brief, but please don't hesitate to reach out to us with any questions; we're happy to help.

The Z/28

Originally sold new at Lou Bachroot Chevrolet in Rockford, IL, this Mulsanne Blue beauty has spent its life in northern IL and southern WI. After several years of storage with its original owner, this '71 Z was sold to a Chevy racing enthusiast in the Waukesha, WI area in the early 1980s. At that time, the car wore original paint and had its complete original driveline.  After his purchase, the Z was in need of paint and was treated to a respray of its striking original colors of #26 Mulsanne Blue Poly with White stripes. The paint sprayed on the car in the early '80s is what is still present today! This is a driver quality car, friends. It's straight, glossy, and incredibly sharp, but has chips and nicks.

With racing in mind, the car's original 10 Bolt rear was replaced with a 12-Bolt Posi unit from a Super Sport Chevelle (still present in the car). The Z's original LT1 was rebuilt, and some suspension upgrades were put in place. Once prepped, the Z cruised the Waukesha, WI area for the next 5-6 years, attending shows and parades around town. Although the 2nd owner has passed, I did speak to the gentleman who he built the engine with. The Mulsanne Blue '71 also saw some weekend duty over at Great Lakes Dragaway in Union Grove, WI where he says the Z was a consistent mid 11 second performer. Here's a photo of the car staging at Great Lakes!

In 1990, the owner lost the Z in a divorce settlement, and it was sold. Remaining in southeastern WI, the 2nd owner actually saw HIS CAR at a show in 1997, and left the owner a note on his windshield. That note will of course be included with the sale of the car. That 3rd owner has also since passed on. The original LT1 350 was removed under their ownership, and replaced with another incredibly STOUT small block. We don't know why the engine was replaced, and we do not know its whereabouts.

The current drivetrain still retains the car's original, born-with M22 Rock Crusher 4-speed, the 12 Bolt the 2nd owner installed, and the small block installed by the 3rd owner. I have to tell you, gang, the current drivetrain in this car is WICKED, absolutely WICKED. Roller tip rockers, Crane Cam, aluminum intake, Holley carb, headers, 3" exhaust, and a Hurst short-throw Indy shifter just scratch the surface of the performance parts strategically installed on this Z.

In my ride along video, I want to stress that I'm not even getting into the throttle on this car. Please if you're going to make this purchase, please make sure you're an experienced driver. This Z/28 is not for the faint of heart. When staying out of the throttle, this Camaro cruises incredibly well. It holds the road well, handles like a 2nd gen Z should, and overall, just feels GOOD.

The car's interior looks mostly original. We had the gauge cluster restored by Tachman at H&H in South Carolina. Photos of the gauges operating are below, and a Quartz movement was installed in the WORKING clock. The tach was also calibrated at that time. The gas tank sending unit is faulty, so that gauge is not reading correctly, and the original tach wire under the hood needs to be located and reinstalled. The car had an aftermarket tach mounted when we purchased it, so it had a separate tach wire run at that time.

Glass, chrome, and trim also appear to be original to the car. Notice in the undercarriage photos that I took a bit of kerosene to an area of the floor to expose the original red oxide primer underneath. It would be incredibly cool to dry ice blast this car's undercarriage, or continue wiping with kerosene to keep exposing the original colors underneath! Finishing off its period correct look, our Camaro rides on a nearly new set of F60 Polyglas reproduction tires.

If you have any additional questions, please don't hesitate to reach out. We're hoping to see this piece of Chevy pony car history placed in the hands of another long-term caretaker.
