Some people say it’s better to burn out than fade away and that’s the route Studebaker took during the 1960s with its four-seat halo car, the Avanti.
This example, made at Studebaker’s South Bend, Indiana factory, this car was sold new at Ed Comitz Studebaker in Tucson, Arizona on November 15, 1963.
Though it was only around dealerships for a short time, the Avanti, which is Italian for forward or onward, quickly drew comparisons to Ford’s Thunderbird and Chevrolet’s Corvette in the early 1960s.
This coupe is finished in Avanti White (code 6331), which has undergone one repaint since new. The car’s paint and trim are in very good order and the color does nothing to diminish the Avanti’s styling, which looks as distinctive now as it did when new. The chrome, wraparound bumpers fit tightly to the body and the engine bay is very tidy.
This two-door rolls on Hankook Optimo white stripe radials, size 205/75R15, at every corner. Each one is mounted to a steel wheel and topped with a factory wheel cover. The wheels and tires are all in good, original order.
Beneath the hood is Studebaker’s 289 CID Jet-Thrust V-8 engine, linked to a three-speed automatic transmission and backed by a 3.31:1 rear end. Driver convenience features include air-conditioning, power steering and power brakes. Other features include a rear fender radio antenna, seat belts and Strato-Vue outside mirrors.
The Avanti featured front disc-brakes that were British Dunlop designed units, made under license by Bendix and was “the first American production model to offer them.” The Corvette wouldn’t get four-wheel discs until 1965, for example.
The Avanti was one of the first bottom breather designs where air enters from under the front of the vehicle rather than via a conventional grille above the front bumper, a design feature much more common after the 1980s.
Inside, the Smoked Elk vinyl interior is in overall good shape, including the driver’s inner door panel. The dashboard has a wooden background and a full suite of gauges.
Competition to this Avanti in 1964 included Chevrolet’s Corvette and Ford’s Thunderbird.
Documentation includes maintenance records from first day of ownership, original owner’s guide, owner/protector service book and accessories book.
