Smokey and the Bandit immortalized the black Trans Am for most car enthusiasts. It is pretty rare to find someone of any age who has not seen this movie so we will not recap the storyline here. In fact, the very reason you are viewing this ad is because you have seen the movie and are entertaining getting a Bandit Trans Am of your own. Of course, the star of the original Smokey and the Bandit was a 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, right? Actually, the four Trans Am's that were used in the movie were 1976 models. Pontiac Motor Division wanted to feature the 1977 model in the movie, but the new model year had not yet gone into production, so Pontiac fabricated up the four 1976 Trans Ams using the sheet metal off the soon-to-be-built 1977 model. So, if you really want a Bandit Trans Am like Burt Reynolds drove in the movie, perhaps you might want to consider this black 1976 Pontiac Trans Am!
This Trans Am features an older re-paint in Starlight Black hue. The paint has some minor chips and blemishes in the finish but still shines with a deep luster. This Firebird sports the correct "Screaming Chicken" hood decal and related Trans Am markings along with the iconic front and rear spoiler and the WS4 on the cowl tag confirms this is a true Trans Am. The front grille and headlight moldings have been detailed with matching gold paint and the correct 15 X 7 Rally II wheels are wrapped in BF Goodrich RWL radial T/A tires to finish off the look of this classic 70's muscle car.
Inside the black interior has been lightly restored with new carpet and headliner. The black seat upholstery shows some light wear on the driver's seat. The spun aluminum dash houses a 5-pod instrument panel with a tachometer featuring a clock, 100mph speedometer, and oil pressure, water temperature, and voltmeter gauges. Options include power windows and locks and a rear window defogger with a vintage AM/FM 8-track stereo having been installed in the dash. This car is equipped with air conditioning but is currently inoperative.
Under the hood sits the Pontiac 6.6l V8 (400cid). The engine compartment has been lightly detailed, and the factory chrome valve covers are still in place. The iconic shaker hood sits atop the factory Rochester Quadrajet 4bbl carburetor, and the scoop has been opened up to draw the high-pressure air from the base of the windshield. A set of Accel 8mm spark plug wires carry the spark from the GM HEI distributor and the exhaust manifolds have been updated with a set of tube headers. Power is transferred through a GM Turbo-Hydramatic 3-speed automatic transmission to the GM 10 bolt differential.
Underneath the floorboards and unibody chassis are unrestored and aside from some light surface rust there is no rust-through issue present. The Trans Am features power front disc brakes with rear drums which have been recently serviced including new rear steel and rubber brake lines. These 3rd-generation Trans Ams are renowned for their handling due in part to the front and rear stabilizer bars which added stability when entering and exiting the turns. A recent Pypes high-performance 2.5" exhaust with high flowing transverse muffler was installed and adds a deep throaty exhaust note to this 'Bird.
This stunning Trans Am will be sure to bring plenty of thumbs up and smiles as you cruise, and just remember Coors Beer is now available East of the Mississippi, so you will not need to purchase this car to run blocker for any bootleg attempts with Snowman! Just the same, this is a great car to straighten a few curvy backroads! Please call if interested or e-mail with specific questions. Thank you for looking.
