1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am

For consignment, a 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am equipped with a matching numbers engine, T-tops and of course, the iconic screaming chicken.  The car was repainted in 2014 and presents in good driver condition.  Read on and get ready to order a CB radio!

Note: This vehicle is sold with a Delaware rebuilt branding on the title

Exterior
Cameo White coats the outside and red Trans Am decals are on every side of the car just in case onlookers don't recognize its form.  The dual headlights flank the "Batmobile" nose and the grille has honeycomb grates, a homage to early models that featured honeycomb shapes in various places.  The red, black, and gray eagle decal is in great condition and T/A 6.6 on the hood scoop indicates the L78 400 underneath.  The three piece wing tops the vertical rear where wide tail lights in body matched bezels loom large over the bumper cover which is slightly askew on one side.  15-inch snowflake wheels are in place but the flares at the wheel openings are missing.  T-tops demonstrate the two different styles available in '77, the black framed and the silver edged.  The dual exhaust splitters are in place and we notice the right one hangs lower than the left, which is closer to the proper position.  Overall, the body and paint are in acceptable condition, however we note areas of body filler work as well as various blemishes, cracking paint, and bubbling.

Interior
Firethorn Red is a classic contrast with the white exterior and starts on the door panels which are simple and have lower storage.  The sport bucket vinyl seats are in good condition with some misfitting of the rear shells.  The back seats look nice as well and the rear plastic wall panels were prone to fading, especially red, and there's some evidence of that here.  Some wear is evident on the steering wheel too, but it's intact with the horn button being a different shade of red.  Faux machined metal backs the dash and in general we would characterize it as driver quality with room for some detailing and restoration, but complete and intact.  A more modern Sony AM/FM/CD radio sits in the center over the molded plastic console, also in mismatched red, housing the automatic shifter.  We also note a crack in the plastic under the storage lid.  Low pile red carpet is protected by red Trans Am mats and the red headliner is sagging a bit and would also benefit from attention.  The trunk is generally clean and covered with a gray mat and includes the Hurst Hatch cover.

Drivetrain
Under the hood the numbers matching 400ci L78 rated at 180 horsepower is in its factory home.  It is fed by a 4-barrel carburetor and tied to a correct TH350 3-speed automatic transmission sending power to the rear 10-bolt with 2.41 gears with Positraction.  Power brakes slow the bird, with disc up front and drums.  Visually, the engine bay is clean with typical surface rust and we note that the A/C components have been removed.

Undercarriage
Lots of surface rust underneath including suspension components, exhaust, parts of the belly pans, and parts of the frame.  We note a crack in the replaced floorboards which have been crudely installed as well as some light invasive rust in the left rear flooring.  The dual exhaust flows back to a pair of FlowMaster mufflers, route over the rear axle, and then exit in the area of the rear fender where the chrome splitters have been welded onto the tailpipe.  Independent coil spring suspension is up front and leaf spring in the back.  We're happy to report there's no leaking oil from the oil pan.

Drive-Ability
We prime the 4-barrel and turn the key, and the shaker hood comes to life as we roll onto the test tarmac.  The engine runs just fine and as always, the F-body has great handling.  Late 70's Trans Ams never lived up to their looks in performance, but this one moves out just fine, albeit with some creaking underneath.  Brakes hook up well and the only thing that doesn't work is the heater blower.

With mid level condition Trans Ams becoming scarce, this one presents a number of options to buyers.  Leave as is and drive the heck out of it or throw it on a rotisserie and bring it back to its former glory.  Either way, you have a winning car that's only getting more valuable and more desirable each year.  So put your pedal to the metal and convoy over to Classic Auto Mall.  10-4 good buddy!
