1969 Plymouth Road Runner RM21 Coupe for Sale
Overview
This incredible 1969 Plymouth Road Runner RM21 Coupe is now available for sale at Chicago Car Club. Originally sold brand new to Robert Short on October 15, 1968, by Friedman Motors, Inc. in Des Moines, Iowa, this car has a rich history. Robert bought this Road Runner upon his return from active duty in Vietnam, making it a one-owner vehicle with complete documentation including the original window sticker, bill of sale, title, factory broadcast sheet, and manuals.

Exterior Condition
The exterior of this Road Runner presents well and is consistent throughout, ready for its next restoration project. The car was resprayed over 40 years ago and is now ready to be repaired and repainted. The original metals are in place with some areas of rust, but they are overall solid and repairable. The car is straight with no signs of structural repairs. The Air Grabber hood is in great shape and complete. The doors, decklid, hood, and glass all line up nicely. The car will need new floor pans, but the wheels are in good shape. A replacement windshield is ready to be installed.
Interior Condition
The interior is complete and original, featuring a bench front seat with a 4-speed manual transmission, AM Radio, and the A87 Road Runner Decor Package. The original vinyls are intact, although the factory carpets and seat covers need replacing. The drivers floor pan is rusted and should be replaced. The interior needs refurbishing but provides a clear template to follow. The odometer is functioning properly, and the gauges show well.
Mechanical Condition
Under the hood sits the numbers-matching original 383 HP V8, mated to the original 4 Speed Transmission. The intake and carburetor have been swapped, but the originals are included with the car. The original air box is complete and fully functional, feeding air from the factory-optioned Air Grabber hood. The underside of the car is largely original, with a newer exhaust installed a few years back. The frame is straight and dry, and the suspension is intact. The braking system was fully serviced in 2017.
Driving Experience
The car runs and drives well. The clutch feels good, and the shifts are clean. Braking is straight, and the car tracks in a straight line. There is some exhaust smoke noted when warmed up, likely due to rich carb jetting after the new carburetor installation, or a valve adjustment. Despite this, the engine runs well and pulls very strongly, with the Positraction rear end making for an enjoyable driving experience. Given its age, the original motor would benefit from freshening up.
Conclusion
This 1969 Plymouth Road Runner RM21 Coupe is a true survivor and an excellent candidate for restoration, especially with the complete documentation and original components. It is a rare opportunity to own a well-documented, one-owner Mopar classic with a rich history.
