By 1959, the General’s mid-priced division, Oldsmobile, followed suit with the industry and kept expanding the wider, lower, longer look.
This Olds Dynamic 88 from that year is finished in Sandstone and Pearl Gray paint with custom pinstriping. It was made in General Motors’ South Gate, California factory (VIN code C). The paint and trim are in overall excellent condition, the car’s chrome bumpers fit tightly to the body, the engine bay is very tidy and the trunk is in good shape. The trunk includes a tire jack and the car has rear fender skirts.
This big couple rolls on new wide whitewall tires and the tires are mounted on flat disc wheel covers. The wheels are in good, original shape.
Under the hood is a 371 CID V-8 engine with fuel injection backed by a Hydramatic four-speed automatic transmission. Driver convenience features include power steering.
Inside are gray cloth front and rear bench seats, a darker gray carpet with a padded gray dashboard and two-tone gray inner door panels. A two-spoke steering wheel faces the driver with a column-mounted shift lever. A factory AM radio resides in the dashboard.
The Dynamic 88 debuted in 1958 and lasted through 1966 positioned as the entry level model below the Super 88. This model featured a more economical Rocket V-8 than its more expensive linemates – a de-tuned 265 horsepower version of the 371 cubic-inch Rocket V-8 with two-barrel carburation.
All Oldsmobiles were completely restyled for 1959, with the 88 series given longer, lower and wider styling on a GM B-body chassis. The 88 shared its appearance with the top-model Oldsmobile 98. Styling highlights for the new models, promoted as the “Linear Look,” included six-window styling on four-door pillared sedans, glassy semi-fastback rooflines on Holiday coupes and flat-blade rooflines with thin windshield and C-pillars on Holiday sedans which created a large open greenhouse effect.
The lower-priced Dynamic 88 retained the two-barrel 265 horsepower 371 cubic-inch V-8, with a 300 horsepower four-barrel version optional. An unusual feature was the what was called the “Safety-Spectrum Speedometer,” in which the bar that is used the measure the speed is green from 0–35 mph, amber at 35–65 mph and red at speeds above 65 mph.
Competition to this Oldsmobile in 1959 included Buick’s LeSabre, Dodge’s Coronet Lancer, Edsel’s Corsair, Pontiac’s Catalina and Rambler’s Ambassador.
