First introduced in 1963, the Buick Riviera stunned the world with its drop-dead gorgeous styling, powerful engines, and abundance of luxury. Jaguar founder and designer Sir William Lyons said that the designers had done "a very wonderful job," and Sergio Pininfarina declared it "one of the most beautiful American cars ever built; it has marked a very impressive return to the simplicity of American car design." Soldiering on for another eight generations, the Riviera was the de facto flagship for the brand. The 6th generation was introduced in 1979 and was the first from wheel drive Riviera. Sales were high, and over 65k were sold in 1985.
