For consignment, a 1934 Hupmobile 417W Series coupe. The 417's were derived from a modified Ford body and was a low price series intended to boost sales. Our consignment has some modern touches and a surprising interior making it a unique and reliable vintage automobile.
Exterior
This Hupmobile wears smooth satin black paint in a look the youngins' might call "murdered out". Chrome bumpers remain which are simple U-shaped pieces that mirror each other front and rear. A black grille is flanked by large headlights and topped with a Hupmobile crest and a hood ornament that differs from the Hupmobile's typical rocket ship. The sloping rear section houses a rumble seat and the step-ups for it are found on the right fender, while two round tail lights are also attached. The front fender is distinctly teardrop shaped and separate from the running board while the doors are reverse hinged with robust handles towards the front. 14-inch chrome wire wheels with knock offs adorn all four corners and the car sits lower than it would have in 1934 and shows a slightly raked attitude. The upright windshield has two wipers behind which the rounded cab rises. Just two dings make up the imperfections and they're hard to find.
Interior
An ornate door pull is backed by diamond stitched black vinyl and the white stitching really helps those diamonds to pop. The doors blend well with the low backed bucket seats where diamond stitched inserts are surrounded by smooth black sides. Not surprisingly, the rumble seat is also diamond stitched. A wood rimmed, banjo style steering wheel offers itself to the driver on a polished steering column, followed by gold rimmed ivory faced Dolphin gauges on a textured black steel dash. Some oak elements appear on the dash including the glovebox while the floor mounted shifter is surrounded by low pile black carpet on a flat floor. A diamond stitched piece floats above on the headliner and the entire interior is clean and well done.
Drivetrain
Behind the vented engine covers sits a 350ci V8 in driver quality visual condition. It's topped by an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor on a Summit Racing intake manifold. A power brake booster underneath assists the disc brakes up front backed by power drums in the rear. Meanwhile, a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission backs the engine, sending power to the 10 bolt rear.
Undercarriage
Relatively clean underneath with typical surface rust on suspension components and driveshaft, while a few drops of oil are noted on the pan and some transmission drop on the tranny pan. The dual exhaust flows from manifolds into a pair of Xlerator mufflers, then out the back via polished tailpipes. Our consignor states the 1968-'1972 Nova front clip shares its vintage with the rear end. Coil spring suspension occupies the front and leaf springs are found out back.
Drive-Ability
The trusty 350 starts right up and rumbles onto the test loop. The interior feels slightly upscale with all the diamonds around and is a comfortable place to be. Outside of the blind spot, visibility is good and head room is plentiful. Rides nice, stops great, handles very well. And our report card reveals all functions work with the exception of the turn signals, so brush up on your arm out the window signals.
Mid-30's Ford coupes are nice and we're honored to represent and sell our fair share of them. But here's something you don't see every day and will have some showgoers scratching their head. It resembles a Ford but also has some unique Hupmobile cues. And in the off chance you don't like the color, you've got a straight all steel body to work with, great bones, and a sound engine. Less than 3,000 417W's were produced and the Hupmobile Club is a smallish worldwide group keeping history alive.
