The Porsche 356 Speedster is a stunning example of automotive history and is a highly sought-after model for collectors and enthusiasts alike. This 1956 Porsche 356 Speedster replica is named after the iconic actor James Dean, who once owned one. It has a custom built fiberglass body by CMC Classic Motor Company, mounted on a 1967 VW Beetle chassis and equipped with a built up 1500cc 1.5L 4 cylinder air cooled engine, 4-speed manual transmission and converted to dual 40 IDF Weber carburetors. You can cruise around with the efficiency of a 1-barrel but will open up to a high performance 2-barrel carb when you want to punch it. This car has rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive RWD layout with the battery and 12 gallon gas tank in the front hood, leaving space for storage. It has drum brakes in the rear and disc brakes in the front.
The sleek black exterior paired with a striking red interior color make for a head-turning combination. The bucket seats have been replaced with red and black vinyl seat covers
and vintage 2 point seatbelts mounted with Porsche emblem. The beige vinyl lined dashboard embellished with chrome trim features 6 gauge VDO instrumentation, a headlight switch and ignition switch uniquely located in the center. An elegant 3 spoke wood-rimmed steering wheel with a Porsche emblem horn button is mounted on a quick release adapter for ease getting in and out of the driver’s seat. Below deck, a roller accelerator pedal adds to its sportiness. The radio has been removed (although included and wire-ready). Dual speakers are located on each doors with an amplifier in the hood compartment.
The exterior is finished in black and remains in good condition. A chrome handle with a gold-finished Porsche insignia rests on the center of the hood. The chrome trim and lighting have all been replaced to give luster to the headlights, signals and retro tear drop taillights. Aero sideview mirrors and a chrome license plate light have been added. Chrome dual exhausts and engine grill give it its recognizable look in the rear. Black 15” wide-5 alloy wheels with a Porsche emblem center have been mounted on new 15R tires. Also freshly replaced, a tan canvas snap-on convertible top gives contrast to the black.
