The Niva is powered by a simple yet rugged 1.6L overhead cam 4-cylinder engine. It has a permanent 4-wheel-drive system with high/low ranges and a locking differential. The Niva also has tall, narrow tires and wheels, and its famous, fully independent front suspension.
The Niva is the first unibody SUV ever produced. It is also the only Soviet vehicle ever to be imported to Japan, where it directly inspired the Suzuki Samurai. The Niva has fulfilled nearly every imaginable role: from a civilian car to an ambulance, a fire truck, an army vehicle, and a tractor. It is the first wheeled vehicle to spend more than 10 years in the Antarctic and has climbed to Mount Everest base camps.
