In the post-Great Depression era, the automakers who survived had done so by utilizing many resources including finding ways to attract new customers and generating multi-levels of models that varied greatly in price. Packard's lower-priced line in the post-Depression era was the One-Twenty and was introduced in 1935. Sales were strong and interest was high with over 55,000 examples produced, providing much-needed cash flow during the weary market. The top-of-the-line Packard was the Twelve, which ranged from $3,820 to $6,435. Sales were modest with around 700 units produced. In the middle were the Eight and Super Eight models, which in 1936 carried fresher styling and were available in many body styles. They both had nearly identical specs, with the main difference being that the Eight cost a bit less and outsold the Super Eight three to one. In keeping with Packard's naming scheme, the 1936 models were the Fourteenth Series, with thirteen skipped presumably for superstitious reasons. For 1936, Packard offered 58 different body styles and engine configurations, but amongst the top of that list was the model 1407 Formal Sedan, which was powered by a mighty twelve-cylinder engine. In total, only 682 Twelves were built for 1936, making them a rare and highly desirable Full Classic® today.
Offered from 20 years of single ownership, this 1936 Packard Twelve 1407 Formal Sedan benefits from an older body-off-the-frame restoration. The body is finished in the dashing color of Orleans Blue and the black padded top presents very well. Over the years, the paint has matured nicely, only showing a few slight blemishes. A true grand classic, this Formal Sedan body rides on classic wide whitewall tires, which enclose black wire wheels with Packard Twelve hubcaps. Other exterior appointments that accentuate this lavish Packard are Trippe safety lights, a Packard Cormorant hood ornament, dual side-mounted spares with metal covers and side mirrors as well as a folding luggage rack.
The interior upholstery was reconditioned a few years back, as was the carpet, and the cabin is spacious enough to transport six lucky occupants. The front and rear compartments are separated by a roll-up privacy window and the rear cabin is furnished with one jump seat, one compartment door, and footrests, while the driver's quarters feature a stylish wood-trimmed dash and a factory radio.
