Looking for a light restomod candidate or a reliable MOPAR shop truck? Consider this ’71 Dodge.
Made in Chrysler’s Fenton, Missouri factory near St. Louis in September 1970, this truck has a delightful patina in its blue exterior along with a MOPAR Performance Accessories and direct connection parts livery. The blue paint is in overall good shape, as is the corresponding trim pieces. The engine bay is very tidy and the chrome bumpers fit tightly to the body. All of the truck’s lights have been converted to LEDs. There is new weatherstripping for the front and rear glass and the doors.
This truck rolls on new Hankook radials, size 235/75R15 at all four corners. Each one is mounted to a steel wheel, topped with factory wheel covers. The wheel covers are in good, original order. The front brakes have been converted to discs.
Under the hood is the ubiquitous 225 CID straight six-cylinder engine in Chrysler’s famous slanted configuration (VIN code B) with a new, Weber two-barrel carburetor. The engine has the following new parts – water pump, fuel pump, electronic distributor, spark plug wires, timing chain, gears, exhaust system and motor mounts. Backing this motor is a new four-speed manual transmission (code A811) with a 3.55:1 rear end and new U-joints.
The blue vinyl interior has new carpet. The full bench seat looks good, as does the three-spoke steering wheel and contrasting white dashboard. A ribbon-style speedometer, common during this era, anchors the dash along with the ancillary gauges. For a bit of whimsy, there’s a green skull atop the floor-mounted shift lever.
On the exterior, a new grille and safety lights made the list of changes for '70-'71 trucks. An easy-off tailgate was another innovation for the camper crowd, as was a wiring provision for the electrical of slide on units. Nineteen seventy-one, being the last year for the Sweptline Era, was still a colorful year for changes and additions. A "Dodge" decal graced the tailgate where previously, the trucks had the letters for the Dodge name stamped into the center of the gate.
Competition to this Dodge in 1971 included Chevrolet’s C10, Ford’s F-100, GMC’s C1500, Jeep’s J-10 and International-Harvester’s D-series pickups.
If you’re a MOPAR fan, if you like pickup trucks or if you’re in need of a shop truck, this 1971 Dodge may fill the bill. Stop by Mission Classics today and check the patina on this truck before you buy it.
