Auburn, the core of E.L. Cord's massive automotive and industrial empire, confidently weathered the shocking October 1929 stock-market crash and the early Great Depression years but pulled out all the stops to reverse declining sales for 1932-33. In 1934, Cord handed leadership of Auburn to Duesenberg president Harold T. Ames, who brought in Gordon Buehrig to update styling. Working with tight funds and little time, Buehrig and his skeleton crew concentrated on judicious styling updates while conserving the best aspects of Alan Leamy's 1934 body designs. Auburn engines were supplied by Lycoming, one of the E.L Cord's many transportation-related companies. Always offering more value for money than the competition, Auburn offered the innovative Columbia 'Dual Ratio' two-speed rear axle on all but its Standard lines, which effectively provided six forward speeds and with the rare, supercharged specification, performance was breathtaking.

Representing the high end of Auburn's 8-cylinder model lines for 1935, this dashing Auburn 851 SC Phaeton continues to benefit handsomely from a concours-level, multiple award-winning restoration. Acquired by the prior owner in 2010, this stunning Deep Green example has been meticulously kept and maintained in a private pre-war automobile collection until just recently. Formerly owned by noted collector Robert Pass during the mid-to-late 1990s, this 851 SC was then sold to a collector who commissioned the restoration, with the work completed 1998-2003, beginning with an exceptionally original vehicle.

Post-restoration, the Auburn enjoyed great success in judged shows and concours, earning Best of Show honors six times, plus 16 national-level awards. Other accolades include the Ab Jenkins Award from the ACD Club, the AACA Senior award, and CCCA Senior Emeritus honors. Exhibition at the 2007 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance include participation in the famous Pebble Beach Tour d'Elegance. This 851 SC Phaeton also served as Poster Car for the 2007 ACD Festival and it was also exhibited at Auburn, Indiana's world-famous Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Museum. Other post-restoration highlights include a first-place ribbon at the Cincinnati Concours d'Elegance, display at an Indianapolis 500 Celebration, and participation in the annual Labor Day Weekend ACD Club Reunion on numerous occasions.

Sporting gorgeous external exhaust pipes, the Auburn is further complemented by desirable accessories including period-appropriate Firestone Blackwall tires, a passenger side-mounted spare tire enclosed by a color-keyed case, 'Auburn 8' hubcaps and beauty rings, a venting windshield, and a rear bustle-style trunk. The 150-horsepower, 280-cubic-inch Lycoming eight-cylinder engine with its Schwitzer-Cummins supercharger starts on command and performance strongly, making it an ideal candidate for a wide array of classic tours, enhanced by the desirable Columbia two-speed rear axle. Exceptionally well-maintained cosmetically and mechanically, this multiple award-winning, factory supercharged CCCA Full Classic Auburn is an excellent choice for a multitude of desirable and enjoyable tours, CCCA CARavans, and shows. As offered, it exemplifies Auburn's innovation, value, and significance to America's prewar automobile industry. Be sure to contact us today for viewing arrangements, obtain full details, and experience the grandeur and adventurous experience that only a supercharged Auburn can possibly deliver.

As-Is:

The Last Detail has described the above-mentioned vehicle to the best of our ability, however, as with all pre-owned automobiles, the condition is subjective, and recommend that the buyer inspect and test drive the vehicle before finalizing their purchase.  The Last Detail shall and will make every reasonable effort to disclose any known defects associated with the vehicle at the buyer’s request prior to close of sale.  No allowances or set aside will be made on account of any incorrectness, imperfection, defect or damage. Any descriptions or representations are for identification purposes only and are not to be construed as a warranty of any type. It is the responsibility of the buyer to have thoroughly inspected the vehicle, and to have satisfied himself or herself as to the condition and value and to bid based upon that judgement solely.  It is the sole responsibility of the buyer to verify the existence of options, accessories and the vehicle condition before time of sale. Any and all differences must be addressed prior to the time of sale. The Last Detail assumes no responsibility for any repairs regardless of any oral statements about the vehicle.  Despite our best efforts to verify a vehicle’s mechanical condition, we are not able to warranty a manufacturer’s workmanship or a previous owner’s diligence in care of said vehicle.  There are no mechanical guarantees, expressed or implied. We will not be responsible for buyer’s remorse or issues to said vehicle once it has left our premises. We are being realistic; most of the cars we sell are vintage and by their very nature will need TLC and some degree of attention sooner or later.  Therefore, all vehicles are sold “AS IS”.  However, extended warranty options are available on most vehicles.  Please inquire if you are interested.
