After a 15 year production run, the body style of the Austin Healey 100/100-6/3000 moved from a production car, to another cog in the wheel of British motoring history. Circuit racing at places like LeMans or Sebring, Rallye Racing in locations like Monte Carlo, or enjoyed by everyday blokes in places like London, the Austin Healey 3000 enjoyed a storied history in the early days, as well as now. It's another British Roadster which seemed to have a face - a smiling one at that, which all sorts of car enthusiasts recognize. To those who are very familiar with the Healey 3000 cars, the Mark III BJ8 like the car you see here, is a desirable variant, which offered a pair of SU carburetors, an upgraded dashboard with wood trim, and slightly different exterior lighting from that of the Mark II. The BJ8, known by some as the Big Healey, was active and successful in circuit racing and rallying, and this car certainly gives a nod to racing Healeys of the past. This particular car is finished in a striking two tone red and black exterior, with a black interior, capped with a black soft top.

When looking at this car it's immediately evident that it was restored in a Rallye-style, as evidenced by the vented front "wings", deletion of the bumpers front and rear, the addition of leather hood straps, extra lights that have been added to the front of the car, and the addition of larger tail lights. All that's missing is a "gumball" with a number, and a fancy Rallye decal. This car is clearly the result of a careful restoration, as the paint and body work are tidy. Rich red, and deep black paint evenly cover the carefully aligned body panels, and give a nod to the two tone Austin Healey competition cars of days past.

As a Mark III model, this car features the updated dashboard, which features wood trim. Smiths gauges that have black faces and white digits keep track of engine vitals, shiny panels of toggle switches control functions like the overdrive, wipers, and lighting, and motoring club and rallye plaques are mounted on the dashboard. The interior has been well kept since restoration from the carpet to the seats and dash trim, though some of the wood veneer is showing a bit of age.

Known to be strong engines, the mill under the hood of the 3000 cars is a 2912cc inline 6 cylinder. In the MKIII cars like this, they produce a good amount of grunt, to the tune of approximately 148 horsepower. Plenty of power for spirited driving, or a cruise around town. This particular car, in keeping with the rallye theme, has a larger aluminum radiator, and three Weber carburetors to replace the factory original pair of SU carbs. The exhaust exits from a pair of exhaust tips just aft of the driver's side door rather than the usual spot at the driver's side rear of the car. Literature and records also come with the purchase of the car.

As a British Marque with such a storied history, the Austin Healey is a car that is immediately noticeable - not just for the seemingly mischievous grin which is part of the styling, but for the classic, flowing lines, wire wheels, delicate chrome trim, and the raspy sounding inline 6. The big Healeys are gorgeous cars, and this one is no exception. Styled as many of the racing Healeys of the '60's were, this car is a beautiful example that the next owner can be proud of. Even if it doesn't have a Monte Carlo Rallye victory under its belt. Please call if interested or e-mail with specific questions. Thank you for looking.

About Garage Kept Motors

Garage Kept Motors, LLC specializes in classic and specialty online auto sales.

For our consignors, we are the only auto brokers that offer a Transparent Sale Disclosure. This means, when a car sells, we provide an exact copy of the Bill of Sale. We do this so our clients know exactly who bought their car, where it went, and most importantly how much we sold it for. No funny business.

For our buyers, our vehicles are listed on the Internet, with over 100 photos, including undercarriage pictures, and walk-around videos of the vehicles running plus a narrative-style write-up of the cars history and features. Our international exposure allows us to sell cars across the globe, and we sell a majority of them out of state and overseas. We deliver honesty and consistency in our photos and descriptions, a “no surprise” approach, so buyers, both near and far, can invest with confidence sight unseen. We are not a gallery. Vehicles can be seen locally by appointment as potential buyers are given our undivided attention.
