The Challenger was described in a book about 1960s American cars as Dodge's "answer to the Mustang and Camaro." It was one of two Chrysler E-body cars, the other being the slightly smaller Plymouth Barracuda. "Both the Challenger and Barracuda were available in a staggering number of trim and option levels" and were intended "to compete against cars like the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang, and to do it while offering virtually every engine in Chrysler's inventory." However, the Challenger was "a rather late response to the pony car wave the Ford Mustang had started." In his book Hemi Muscle Cars, Robert Genat wrote that the Challenger was conceived in the late 1960s as Dodge's equivalent of the Plymouth Barracuda, and that the Barracuda was designed to compete against the Mustang. The Barracuda was actually the first car in this sporty car segment by a few months, but was quickly overshadowed by the release of the segment defining Mustang (the segment being referred to as "Pony Car"). He added that Chrysler intended the new Dodge as "the most potent pony car ever," and positioned it "to compete against the Mercury Cougar and Pontiac Firebird." Genat also noted that the "Barracuda was intended to compete in the marketplace with the Mustang and Camaro/Firebird, while the Dodge was to be positioned against the Cougar" and other more luxury-type muscle cars.

This particular Challenger is a very special car as it has been meticulously maintained and is very well documented with the original window sticker, build sheet and a folder full of service records, along with mostly original paint and interior.

The Challenger you see here is one of a rare color combination: Bright Red (FE5 code) with a White full vinyl roof and Black/White vinyl interior (XW code). The paint is in great condition, only showing minor imperfections, which is typical of a 40 year old original car. The body is exceptionally sound, as it should be. The hardtop is finished in white vinyl and looks great, showing no notable staining, imperfections or wear. This Challenger came equipped with a black spoiler which gives this already mean looking car a more aggressive look. The chrome looks excellent with only minor imperfections. This is truly an amazing Mopar!

Inside, you will find that original interior is still intact. The seats are wrapped in Black/White interior (XW Code) and show no notable signs of wear or imperfections in both the front and back. This car is equipped with bucket seats and a console shifter. The door panels match the interior and look great with no signs of wear or imperfections. The carpet is black and looks great! The dashboard appears to be original and looks good as well. Overall, the interior is in excellent condition.

Under the hood, you will find a 318 cubic inch V8 engine, complete with an Edlebrock Intake and Carter AFB 4-barrel carburetor. Attached to the V8 is an automatic transmission with a slap stick shifter in the center console. This car came equipped with power steering. The Challenger sits upon a set of original Challenger wheels wrapped in 225/70R14 tires that look great.

The Challenger you see here is a very well documented car, with everything including the original window sticker, build sheet and many service records. The car has been meticulously maintained and is in tip top mechanical shape. It is not often a classic Mopar of this caliber becomes available to the public for sale.
