Up for auction is a 1970 (and a 1/2 ) Camaro Rally Sport Z28 LT1
360hp with a Muncie 4-Speed close ratio manual transmission.
The 1970 "Z28 Special Performance Package" (RPO
Z28) was not only positioned as the top Camaro performer, but it put its
money where its mouth was. Designed to race in the SCCA Trans Am Series,
the 1970 rules changes allowing for the 5.7L engine meant the Camaro was able
to now use the 350 engine. The previous Z28's were limited to 302 cubic inches
and were known to be temperamental on the street. Due to the solid lifter, high
revving cam, Air Conditioning was still not available on the Z28. With a stout
drivetrain, including a mandatory 12 bolt rear axle, and a tuned suspension,
the Z28 was a match for anything found on the street, or at the track.

The numbers above match the warranty card/Protect-o-plate shown
in the pictures to follow. I believe that the drivetrain and the Warranty card
are original to this Camaro; however I do not claim to be one of the experts
on the subject. Thus, I will show clear and close up pictures of all of the
above part numbers, casting numbers, date codes, and documents.
Characteristics
of the 1970 Z28 include the following:
The Z28 got a unique throttle pedal. Its hinged off the
floor with a bracket mounted on the floor board. The Z28 has an 8000 rpm tach,
which redlines at 6500 RPM. The Z28 has a 3/8 inch fuel line, and F41
suspension with a rear sway bar with the brackets welded to the frame
All of the above are correct on this car.
Paint
& Body:
I believe this Camaro has all of its original sheet metal including
the floors and trunk pan. The doors fit real well and they shut nice and solid.
The car looks pretty straight down the sides also. Im not sure how old the
paint is but Im guessing its several years old (obviously not original paint,
its too good for that)
It is a quality paint job and the car is slick and
shiny but not perfect and not a trailer queen. Its a car that you can drive
and enjoy. I believe the windshield is not original and was replaced at some
point. The windshield is LOF but newer. The side glass and the rear look
original from the Soft Ray LOF stamps and in good condition except the drivers
glass does have some scuff marks on it. The trim and the bright work around the
glass and on the car look to be the original and it is in very nice condition.
The bumpers front and rear are excellent with no pitting at all, possibly
re-chromed Im not sure. The front running lights/turn signals are the original
with the 70 date on them and the rear marker lights and the rear tail lights
are all dated to 1970 and in excellent condition. All lights work. The tires
are Goodyear Polyglas GT F60-15s. On the back of the tire it reads Made in
Argentina and I believe a date code that reads MUUD FFF 059. There is a little
cracking on the back of the tires but believe it or not these tires actually
ride pretty good. I guess if you were going to drive it a lot you would want to
replace them but I didnt as I thought that they might be old and have some
value to them.
Interior:
The interior is in very nice condition with the exception
that a few places of paint flaked off the door panels here and there. The seats
are excellent and firm, the carpet is excellent (probably replacement as I
cant imagine the original would be that good). The dash seems to be all
original as well as the gauges and the Rally Sport steering wheel and with some
age and patina on them
all gauges and interior lights work and the original AM
radio works. It has a center console that is in great condition except a little
patina on the shift pattern. The headliner is a little looser than it should be
but its not falling down or anything. The car smells fine on the inside with
no foul odors. This car has obviously been pretty well cared for over the
years.
Engine, Transmission, Drivetrain:
This Camaro starts, runs, idles, handles, brakes, and
performs absolutely excellent in every way. It shifts perfect, sounds perfect,
with the solid lifter cam, and the car will get up and go. I had to try it out
and honestly it will haul it. Driving the car might be the best part of it. If
you think that you like it, once you drive it you will buy it. The car is
awesome. It doesnt need one thing that I know of whatsoever except maybe a set
of tires. Most of the nuts, bolts, fittings, clamps, and parts are original to
the car with some patina. I didnt detail under the hood for that very reason.
The underside has been detailed and painted Red Oxide like
these cars were originally from the factory. The sway bar mounts are welded to
the frame. It has a new fuel tank however most of the nuts and bolts underneath
are original.
The trim tag is not on the car. It was stolen off the car at
a car show
(I am considering ordering a correct replacement trim tag for
the car)
Also, I cannot find the VIN above the oil filter and I have
looked real close.
(Close up picture shown)
However the date code on the engine pad matches the POP
exactly and the VIN number declares this car to be a late May build which lines
up with every significant date code on the car.
Oh yeah, it does have the reverse lockout
shifter/transmission. (The car has to be in reverse to get the key out)
I believe that this is a numbers matching car from one end to
the other. However; you decide for yourself and if you are interested in buying
this Camaro then you are more than welcome to have any of the so-called
experts to inspect the car. Just do it before you place your bid and before
you purchase the car. Look closely and research before you buy... I do believe
that I have a picture of every significant part number, date and casting code
clearly shown, and I spent a lot of time researching and taking these pictures
in order to verify this car. I also had a very knowledgeable expert to look
at the numbers myself and he gave this Camaro the thumbs up
so I bought the
car.
I can pick you up at the Augusta GA airport or the Thomson GA
(small aircraft) airport on almost any day except Sunday in order for you to inspect
this Camaro for yourself.
