By the late 80’s, U.S. Porsche dealers were demanding that the factory produce a domestic example of their popular slant nose or flachbau edition 930 Turbo. From 1981 to 1986, Porsche had only produced slant noses for non-U.S. markets via their sonderwunschen” (special order) program. For 1987-1989 Porsche allowed U.S. customers to order the Slant Nose option as an M505 or M506 code. This was a $30,000 option and as a result only a handful were ordered. The 1989 model year is considered the most desirable with the one-year only 5-speed manual (G50/50) transmission. However, Porsche was already moving on to their 964 program and only 60 coupes were produced. With this example’s late build date, there is a very good chance that this could be one of the last factory slant noses ever delivered to the North America.
This Slant Nose was produced on February 15th, 1989 and sold new by Valenti Motors Porsche of Watertown, CT. Besides the host of standard features like limited slip differential, sway bars, air conditioning, etc., this 930 was well-equipped with the following additional factory options:
Steering wheel w/raised hub
Heated seats
Shorter gear shift lever
Slant nose body option
Lumbar support seats
Luggage compartment black velour
Supple leather seats
Sunroof
Amplifier system
Blaupunkt Radio “Reno”
The total MSRP was over $104,000. That’s nearly $200,000 in today’s dollars. With the tasteful upgrades performed, the price would be over $290,000 today.
The original owner wanted to have the ultimate street Porsche and invested another $90,000 in today’s money to create a 930 that would surpass the European offerings. The help of MODE (Motorsport Design), Inc. of Scottsdale, Arizona was enlisted. Bob Holcombe, the founder, is considered the maestro when it comes to air-cooled Porsche forced induction technology. He is a master engine builder and is regarded as one of the best in the business by Porsche Turbo experts both on and off the racetrack. The technology developed for this 930 changed the industry. In particular, this was the first prototype for their revolutionary 6-butterfly intake design.
Although the build was extensive and took place in three phases from the fall of 1990 to January of 1993, the original numbers matching case was used in the build (due to its strength). They were able to retain much of the stock look without any modifications to the exterior. The build not only created substantially more horsepower, but it also increased the engine lifespan and reliability. We have complete build specifications of this blueprinted and balanced twin-plug engine available for the serious collector.
To handle the new power, the brakes were initially upgraded to an S4 system and then, in 2003, to Porsche 993 Turbo “Big Reds.” The suspension system included a custom rear coil over design with Bilstein race shocks and a radius arm kit. Finally, the wheels were upgraded to a set of rare 18” factory 3-piece Speedlines (same ones from the 964 3.6 Turbo program).
In 2005, the car was sold to the 2nd owner: a Porsche collector from Northern California. This owner carefully stored the car in his climate controlled airplane hangar and rarely used it. He then sold the car to the current Los Angeles owner in July of 2009 with 15,200 miles. The current owner is a long time Porsche enthusiast/collector and early member of R Gruppe. This unique and rare slant nose checked all the boxes for him. It was pristine/low miles and although tastefully upgraded, it still retained its originality. For the next 5-years, he added 7k miles by enjoying it at local Porsche events including an R Gruppe Treffen.
The car was regularly serviced and maintained by TLG Auto…one of the top respected Porsche air-cooled specialists in Southern California. Nearly $10k has been invested on recent services to make sure everything is operating properly and ready to go. Besides all the routine oil changes (at least once a year), the following services were completed:
Major service (2k miles ago):
- Valve adjustment
- New spark plugs
- Replace both distributor caps and rotors
- New drive belts
- Adjust timing and fuel mixture
New shifter bushings
Replace suspension bushings/lubricate
Alignment
Complete air conditioning service/repair
Brake flush
New tires
Replace vacuum lines
The condition of this Slant Nose is remarkable. The original paint is spectacular. There are hardly any signs of use. There are only a couple small scratches and two thin paint spots on the sunroof panel. There is also a superficial paint bubble at the bottom of the rear glass (see pic). The interior is spectacular. The leather looks great with no tears. The dash is straight with no cracks. Everything works properly including the ice-cold air-conditioning system. These cars are fragile and can easily show wear if not properly maintained. It is clear that this example was cherished.
With only 60 examples of the final factory slant noses to ever be produced, when will be the next opportunity to purchase a truly blue chip collectible arise?
This 930 comes complete with original tool kit, spare spacesaver, owner’s manuals with cover, extra key, window sales sticker, recent service records, correct original Blaupunkt radio with manual, original factory stereo front and rear speakers, correct air compressor, and correct jack.
