In 1989, to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Trans-Am, a total of 1,555 special 20th Anniversary Trans-Am s were produced. These vehicles came from the factory with a unique drivetrain, consisting of a special 3.8 liter, intercooled, turbocharged engine backed by a heavy duty 4-speed transmission. This engine is much the same as the turbo V-6 powerplant shared from the 1986-87 Buick Grand National, however different heads were implemented for improved exhaust flow and combustion chamber design. Subsequently, different pistons were required, a cross-drilled crank was utilized and a larger 12 fin/inch Buick GNX-style intercooler was adopted along with specially designed stainless steel headers and a high-pressure fuel pressure regulator. Although Pontiac officially rated the horsepower at 250hp, in reality it developed an honest 301hp on the GM dyno. The Turbo TA also came with substantially upgraded brakes. The front discs are 12 inch police rotors with Corvette twin piston aluminum calipers. The rear discs were also increased to 12 inches in 1989 and use Corvette single piston calipers. Car and Driver magazine tested the car and it scorched the drag strip with a 0-60 mph blast of 4.6 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 13.4 seconds at 101 mph and a top speed of 153 mph! The 20th Anniversary Trans-Am was selected to pace the Indianapolis 500 and it marked the first time a production car would not need any performance modifications to pace the field. Original Turbo TA owners were sent a special box containing the door stickers, a Turbo TA keychain, cassette tape, and a leather owner s manual cover. This car comes with those items and only has a staggering 10000 original miles! In addition to three pace cars, an additional 162 Festival Turbo TA s were at Indy for VIP and parade duty. All of the cars at Indy, including the three pace cars, had T-tops and cloth interiors. This car was one of the Festival cars (Documented) used at the track in Indy making it even more collectible! As for the three actual pace cars, one now resides in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, another is in the Pontiac collection, and one was presented to race winner Emerson Fittipaldi. Other than those three, this one may very well be the next most desirable TTA in existence! Don t miss this rare opportunity to be the lucky owner of a very rare and collectible part of history.
