1958 Porsche 356A 1600 Super Coupe

This dry 1958 A Coupe languished in a body shop for 20 years. Original color is Meissen Blue over dark red. The Certificate of Authenticity shows the seats as “Dark Red with Corduroy Inserts.  Hence we believe the seating to be original.  The original seats are complete and in decent condition. The floor pans are original and very dry. The wheel wells and torsion bar areas are dry as well.  The previous owner started the restoration which started with the passenger-side rocker panel. The battery pan needs to be replaced.  This piece is available from Restoration Design for less than $100.   Most reading this ad will know that every single part is still available for this car at numerous Porsche vintage parts sellers. 

The car was probably club raced or run in Solo events in the '60's as is evidenced by the cool decals on the quarter widows, dash, and gas tank. These period decals are worth preserving. What you see in the photos is how the car is sold.  Door handles and hood pull etc were lost in storage and do not come with the car.  Fortunately they are easily found online.

The original owner installed a Bendix electric fuel pump in the tunnel and a Maserati auxiliary fuel pump in the battery box. Oddly enough however there are no signs of a roll bar.  Perhaps he may have competed in "Solo" events. According to a previous owner  the 1600 Super engine # 820492 had been rebuilt just prior to him buying the car 23 years ago and that it was never installed nor started.

It started with a brief puff of smoke and ran well with no knocks or smoke.  A peek into the internals show new parts. 

The engine was mothballed in his climate-controlled garage for over 20 years. During that time, the Solex carburetors were bagged and boxed and duct tape covered the manifolds. One of the valve covers was removed to inspect the rocker-arm assembly and it looked clean and fresh. The oil on the dipstick looks new.   It is surprising how rust free the car is and that it could still have the original pans. The tar-based sound deadening material on the driver and passenger sides is original and unmolested.  The Abarth exhaust is original and restorable with no pinholes or rust. The front and rear window seals are new and not fully installed. They were duct taped in for transport hence the white residue on the new rubbers.

Nice car for an easy restoration. Or hook up the engine, service the brakes and be in the running for “Peoples Choice” award at the next car show.  The car rolls and steers freely.  Brakes are not frozen.  Hagerty Valuation Tool shows a restored 1958 1600 Super at $142,000.

I reserve the right to end this listing at anytime should the vehicle no longer be available for sale. The following terms of sale apply to all of my auctions.

2. You the bidder are entering into a legal and binding contract to purchase the automobile listed on this page. Please do not bid if you do not intend to purchase.

3. Buyers are responsible to pay a non-refundable $1000 deposit via paypal within one business day. Full payment must be received within five business days from end of auction.

4.  I can normally ship normal cars to Europe for only $990. 

5. California residents pay sales tax and registration fee unless you pick the car up with a trailer/transporter with Bill of Lading showing an address outside CA state line. Out-of-State buyers may register and pay applicable taxes in their home state so no sales tax for you either.

6. Seller reserves the right to notify bidders and end the auction early without any liability to the seller.

7. No bid retractions allowed 24 hours prior to auction end. Please have all necessary information available to complete transaction.

8. The vehicles herein are pre-owned and they are sold as "As Is" condition.
