Vehicle info

In 1966, the NOVA was given a bit of a facelift to give the car a clean appearance similar to the Chevelle and Malibu. Also introduced for the model year was the addition of the L79 option that would lift a 350hp 327ci V8 that was destined for a Corvette and slap it into the Nova. It was an instant hit, and over 5,000 were ordered. Finding them today however, is a lot more difficult as many were ordered strictly to compete on the quarter mile. Yet that's exactly what we have for you today in our showroom. This '66 Nova SS features all of its original sheetmetal, packs its original L79 327 that's backed by a correct Muncie 4-speed, and carries less than 10,000 original miles. If you're in the market for some highly correct, investment grade metal that'll continue to rise in value, there's no denying it here's your next prospect!

But before we get too far let's first decode the VIN.
VIN: 118376W138737
1: Chevrolet
1837: Chevy Nova SS
6: 1966
W: Willow Run, Michigan assembly plant
******: six digit production number

Originally assembled in the Willow Run, Michigan assembly plant, today it sits in better than factory conditions thanks to a complete extensive rotisserie restoration. Still boasting all of its original sheetmetal and housing the aforementioned original L79 327ci V8, this '66 Nova SS might be the best investment grade muscle car we have in our showroom right now. Adding to the appeal, is the fact that the 9,816 miles that the odometer brags is believed to be the actual mileage. That's right an L79 327 Nova with less than 10,000 actual miles!

The subdued and classy lines of the prototypical Nova are a bit more aggressive than the early 60s Novas but still a bit subdued compared to their Camaro and Mustang counterparts. And because they're so universal in appeal, they've continued to gain significant popularity. It starts with the paint, this 48 year old time capsule is covered in a vibrant correct coat of Regal Red and is free of any ripples or blemishes. At the front of this hardtop, bright halogen headlamps hang a simple stainless grille over a clean bumper and stylish square parking lights. Behind the Nova SS branded grille, a peaked hood leads the eye to like-new glass that's framed by straight stainless trim, mirrored wipers and fresh chrome drip rails. At the sides of that glass, a clean, modernist profile centers a familiar bowtie driver's side mirror, traditional GM door handles and polished, stylized fenders, fuel filler and classy Nova emblems. And at the back of the car, vertical, chrome-trimmed tail lights illuminate a second chrome bumper and dual exhaust.

Forget everything else about this Nova, the real story and why this Nova is so extremely collectable is lying under the hood. Powering this real deal Super Sport is the one year only L79 option that placed the 327ci Corvette mill inside the Nova . Pop the hood and you'll find the original 327 cubic inch Chevrolet V8 that hangs a correct 3791362 casting number and a matching partial VIN. Savvy collectors will identify the 327 right away thanks to the chrome heavy duty, twin-snorkel air cleaner. Fuel and air flow from the old school 4-barrel carburetor into a cast iron intake that's framed by factory Chevy high flow heads and correctly decaled chrome valve covers. The engine utilizes a special Duntov-designed cam and 11:1 compression to produce 350hp from the small block. Spent gases funnel into correct, cast iron exhaust manifolds which, thanks to true-dual pipes, create a nice deep roar. That roar is the product of sparks sequenced from a familiar points distributor to fresh Packard Radio TVRS wires. Those sparks are generated by pliable V-belts, which spin an alternator behind a shrouded fan, "GM" branded hoses and a factory-correct radiator that very well could be the original. This entire engine compartment, from its Chevy Orange paint and convincing Delco battery topper to its Satin Black fenders and plastic washer fluid bottle, is decaled, detailed and ready to show and go.

One look under this sturdy cruiser reveals a solid chassis that's just as ready for the road as that stout 327. Power flows to the pavement through an era-correct Muncie 4-speed manual and a GM 12-bolt with a 3.31 positraction gear. Holding that virtually unbreakable drivetrain off the ground is a restored double A-arm front and leaf spring rear suspension. Stopping power comes courtesy of manual drum brakes at all four corners. Exhaust flows from the aforementioned pipes to big, factory replacement mufflers and well-hidden turn downs. The body's rust-free floors are layered in bright red oxide, which was bestowed during their detailed restoration. The car's rugged chassis and fully sorted driveline still display a full roster of accurately duplicated inspection marks. And all this old school Americana rolls on 14-inch steelies which spin 6.95-14 BF Goodrich Silvertown whitewalls around Super Sport-specific wheel covers.

Regardless of what motor made its way into the subframe, the Nova always stayed true to its economical roots. No place was that more evident than the interior. The inside of this '66 SS stays true to that formula with only the bare essentials in place. Seating is provided by nicely recovered black bucket seats, simple black door panels featuring chrome hardware sit at either side. From the driver's seat, a showroom quality dashboard places nothing more than a speedometer and fuel gauge in the cluster. The restorer chose not add an aftermarket tachometer or any other gauge to the keep the interior as authentic looking as possible. At either side of the cluster, there are controls for items like the ventilation system, push button AM radio and lights. An authentic Nova Super Sport steering wheel with a red, white and blue Chevrolet horn button tops the lockable steering column. Bright pieces such as the window cranks and door handles look brand new as does the black headliner. At ground level, fresh black carpet looks to be brand new. To the rear of the cabin, a utilitarian trunk retains its utilitarian factory style with the correct jack and spare tire in place.

The sale of this incredibly original Nova includes the original title, original bill of sale, and original protect-o-plate.

Simply put, here you have a piece of history, rotisserie restored, and is 1 of the rare Nova SS's to feature the 1-year only L79 option. Seldom do you find a time capsule this well preserved, thanks to less than 10,000 original miles, with this level of collectability! With its original hardware, high visibility, and all the right paperwork, if you are a serious collector this is a Nova you can't allow to pass you by!
