History

The Chevrolet Chevelle was a mid-sized automobile produced by theChevrolet division of General Motors in three generations for the 1964 through1977 model years. Part of the GM A-Body platform, the Chevelle was one of Chevrolet'smost successful nameplates. Body styles include coupes, sedans, convertiblesand station wagons. Super Sport versions were produced through the 1973 modelyear.

The Chevelle was intended to compete with the Ford Fairlane. Inline with other Chevrolet series, the two-door hardtops were called Sportcoupes. The Chevelle SS represented Chevrolet's entry into the muscle carbattle. The Chevelle SS396 became a series of its own in 1966 with series/stylenumbers 13817 and 13867.

1966 saw a complete restyle of the Chevelle on the previous framethat included smooth contours, a broad new grille and bumper treatment, andcurved side windows. Bulging rear fender lines and a "flyingbuttress" roofline were highlights of the '66 hardtops. The new bodyreflected the "Coke bottle" body shape that became the fad forAmerican cars in the mid-1960s.
