Here’s a rare, well preserved 1961 Lincoln Continental 4-door hardtop with a tasteful color combination. Many collectors prefer these first-year cars to the later models; the Continentals got larger throughout the sixties but the design was never more elegant than in its debut year. We actually prefer the size of the ’61 over the larger cars—in addition to being a more manageable car to drive through town, the interior on the early cars is more intimate and the visibility is much better.

This example is a good driver that could easily be restored to show condition, and with plenty of power and torque on tap from the 430cid V8 and smooth shifts from the three-speed automatic, it needs no major mechanical attention. The black leather interior is in nice shape, and affords a new owner the option of converting to the highly desirable “black on black” color scheme. Unlike most, this car is not plagued by faulty window switches and electrical gremlins.

On the exterior, there are few spots that need to be touched up, and we believe the white paint dates back to the late seventies, but overall, the body has held up very well. Other than some light pitting on the door handles, the chrome brightwork is in very good shape.

Underneath, the car is in excellent condition with the exception of the front torque box, located under the radiator. We’re currently making the repair to this cross member and it will be “as original” at the time of sale.

Overall, it’s a strong driver with tremendous potential and lots to love. There are very few 61s on the road, making this a rare find and a very worthy investment and restoration candidate. As we spend more time with this car, we’re struck by its elegance and beauty, and we believe that 1961 marked the peak of Lincoln’s design and branding achievements.
