Cadillac boss: Don't ask why we have so many sedans

Ugh, crossovers. Car-based, high-riding station wagons, for some reason, sell in absurd numbers and make automakers lots and lots of money. That's why automakers with a strong lineup of CUVs are running strong, while sedan-heavy brands are struggling. Cadillac is all too aware of this fact. While the company is preparing to launch the new CT6 luxury sedan, it's also realizing four sedans, a coupe, a crossover, and a $73,000, old-school, body-on-frame SUV does not a healthy lineup make. Worse, though, as Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen rued during the LA Auto Show, is that the new CT6 is joining a segment already oversaturated. While it's a big, expensive vehicle, it's not much bigger or more expensive than the CTS and XTS sedans. "Please don't ask me why we have three cars in the same segment," de Nysschen said, stopping midway through an interview with Automotive News on the CT6's market placement to make the crack. "That's a whole different subject." As for those CUVs, the new XT5 debuted in LA, and it will eventually be joined by another much-needed CUV in 2018, AN reports. Related Video:

Junkyard Gem: 1973 Cadillac Eldorado

The 1971-1978 Cadillac Eldorado was a gloriously ridiculous personal luxury coupe, packing a monstrous 500-cubic-inch V8 (that's 8.2 liters for you freedom-hating metric types) under its acre-sized hood for the first five years of production. Fuel economy was comfortably into single-digit territory, which meant you had to be a real high roller to be able to feed a new Eldo after OPEC turned off the oil spigot. View 18 Photos This car appears to have been sold new in Denver, and the extensive bodywork and sanded areas indicate that it was someone's project car prior to coming to the end of the line. The front-wheel-drive system used in the Cadillac Eldorados and Oldsmobile Toronados of this era was known as the Unified Powerplant Package, and it used a longitudinally-mounted engine feeding a chain-drive setup that proved to be amazingly sturdy and reliable. So sturdy, in fact, that it was used in gigantic front-wheel-drive GMC motorhomes. Everyone agrees that these cars are cool, but few are willing to rescue a rough example and take on the difficult and expensive job of a full restoration. 2015 Cadillac Escalade on sale in April priced at $71,695*

With the fourth-generation Cadillac Escalade set to go on sale in April, Cadillac has released the pricing data for its fullsize luxury SUV. While there's no retail configurator yet, the data posted on AOL Autos - and confirmed by Cadillac - shows that the 2015 Escalade will have a starting price of $71,695 (*not including $995 for destination).
This new starting price is about $8,000 more than the outgoing model, but Cadillac is quick to point out that the latest 'Slade is packed with more standard equipment in the new base Standard trim that actually puts it more on par with the midlevel Premium trim on the 2014 model (currently priced at $73,245). These new standard features include Magnetic Ride Control, LED headlights and taillights and 20-inch wheels.
Stepping up to the 2015 Escalade Luxury, the price increases to $75,695 and includes added equipment like 22-inch wheels, head-up display, power fold-and-tumble second-row seats and safety systems such as forward collision warning and lane departure warning. The top-rung 2015 Escalade Premium will start at $80,195 adding features such as a rear-seat entertainment system, illuminated exterior door handles and the Driver Assist Package consisting of front and rear automatic braking and adaptive cruise control.
