Recharge Wrap-up: Lyft partners with Didi Kuaidi, Cadillac uses ultracapacitors

Lyft and Chinese on-demand transportation venture Didi Kuaidi have announced a partnership. Additionally, Didi Kuaidi is investing $100 million in Lyft. The two ridesharing companies will share technology and provide interoperability between platforms. For users, this means it will be easier to get around when traveling between the US and China. "In today's rideshare environment, where every region presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities, partnering with the homegrown leader is the winning approach to Chinese expansion," says Lyft President and co-founder John Zimmer. Beginning October 1, the one-way carsharing service will expand its boundaries beyond its current Miami service area to include neighboring Miami Beach. "We're thrilled to see car2go expand to Miami Beach," says Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine. "Miami Beach residents and visitors are increasingly seeking new, environmentally conscious options to move around North, Middle, and South Beach, and carsharing is an important part of realizing that vision." Read more from Car2go. ClipperCreek has added the HCS-30 EVSE to its product line. The 24-amp, 240-volt Level 2 charging station is designed for residential and workplace duty. It allows for faster charging without the customer having to upgrade their electrical service panel. Cadillac will use ultracapacitors in its stop-start systems for 2016. Rather than relying on battery power to run electrical systems while the engine is not running, the utracapacitors can provide a stable flow of energy without losing lifespan to repeated cycling. Supplied by Maxwell Technologies, the ultracapacitors are also lighter than batteries and, according to Cadillac, provide smoother restarts. The 2016 models to use the updated stop-start technology as standard will be the ATS and CTS, with the exception of the V performance variants. Read more at Green Car Reports. Cadillac ATS was almost front-wheel drive

"We were going to do a front-wheel drive Cadillac compact off of Delta because it was going to be less expensive," Doug Parks, General Motors' vice president of global product programs, told the Automotive News during the Detroit Auto Show in January of this year. That sentence, referring to early ATS discussions more than five years ago - a period when the automaker, and the industry, was struggling - reveals that Cadillac's highly acclaimed rear-wheel drive compact sedan almost never happened.
Parks revealed that that automaker actually built a 2.0-liter test mule, on GM's Delta platform (shared with the Chevrolet Cruze and Buick Verano) and tested it in Europe. While the prototype was "pretty darn good," according to Parks, the team realized that in order to compete against Mercedes-Benz and BMW it would have to invest in a new rear-wheel drive platform.
The resulting all-new Alpha platform would eventually underpin the Cadillac ATS, and many would argue that its balanced rear-wheel drive chassis is its single most important attribute. Thankfully, the Alpha's goodness won't stop with the ATS. The upcoming 2014 Cadillac CTS and the future Camaro will also share its architecture, meaning the Cimarron will remain a distant memory.

2016 Cadillac CT6 to get an aluminum body?

Well this is interesting: A hot-off-the-press report in Automobile claims the coming Cadillac CT6 will have an aluminum body. Most write-ups on the CT6 claim it will have a body that's a combination of aluminum and high-strength steel - Automobile itself wrote of "high-strength steel, aluminum, and steel stampings" in October. An all-aluminum body would be quite the reversal, contradicting the last four months of reportage and company statements on the matter. Mark Reuss, EVP of global development at General Motors, told The Detroit News in October, "We will create with the CT6, the world's most advanced body structure... [and] it's not aluminum. It's a stronger, smarter, safer premium luxury vehicle." It echoed the earlier Automobile story in saying the CT6 would use GM's "patented welding technology with high-strength steel, aluminum and steel stampings and castings." That same month, the Wall Street Journal ran a piece titled, "GM Won't Follow Aluminum Strategy in Future Cars," in which Reuss said, "making big statements around all carbon fiber, all aluminum, all magnesium, they're very interesting," and that GM wouldn't be doing it. That piece also circled back to a material mix and GM's special welding process, saying the CT6 "will have a body made of aluminum, high-strength steel and other materials, and will be 100 kilograms (220 pounds) lighter than a similar-sized car made of high-strength steel." We don't know what kind of body Cadillac's new assault on luxury is going to wear, but now we can't wait to find out.
