2016 Cadillac CT6 to get an aluminum body?

Well this is interesting: A hot-off-the-press report in Automobile claims the coming Cadillac CT6 will have an aluminum body. Most write-ups on the CT6 claim it will have a body that's a combination of aluminum and high-strength steel - Automobile itself wrote of "high-strength steel, aluminum, and steel stampings" in October. An all-aluminum body would be quite the reversal, contradicting the last four months of reportage and company statements on the matter. Mark Reuss, EVP of global development at General Motors, told The Detroit News in October, "We will create with the CT6, the world's most advanced body structure... [and] it's not aluminum. It's a stronger, smarter, safer premium luxury vehicle." It echoed the earlier Automobile story in saying the CT6 would use GM's "patented welding technology with high-strength steel, aluminum and steel stampings and castings." That same month, the Wall Street Journal ran a piece titled, "GM Won't Follow Aluminum Strategy in Future Cars," in which Reuss said, "making big statements around all carbon fiber, all aluminum, all magnesium, they're very interesting," and that GM wouldn't be doing it. That piece also circled back to a material mix and GM's special welding process, saying the CT6 "will have a body made of aluminum, high-strength steel and other materials, and will be 100 kilograms (220 pounds) lighter than a similar-sized car made of high-strength steel." We don't know what kind of body Cadillac's new assault on luxury is going to wear, but now we can't wait to find out. 2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe priced from $37,995*

Cadillac has released pricing details on its new-for-2014 ATS Coupe. The new model, which will be available with buyer's choice of a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder or a 3.6-liter V6 (the ATS Sedan's base 2.5 won't be making the trip) can be had with optional all-wheel-drive in place of the standard rear-wheel setup, while customers can also snag a six-speed manual or six-speed auto.
Prices start at $37,995, which represents a $2,900 premium over the 2014 ATS Sedan (pricing on the 2015 four-door isn't available yet) with the same 2.0-liter engine. Still, the ATS Coupe starts at just over $2,500 less than a base BMW 428i, which is also less powerful and offers less standard equipment. The Caddy is also less costly than the Mercedes-Benz C250 Coupe, although only by about $200. It's even cheaper than the Audi A5, which starts at $38,105, but that model includes all-wheel drive as standard. It should be noted that these prices are without their respective destination charges (*$995 for the Caddy, $925 each for the BMW and the Mercedes and $895 for the Audi).
Unfortunately, Cadillac hasn't released any additional pricing information beyond what we have here, so we can't tell you how much things like all-wheel drive, an automatic transmission or the 321-horsepower V6 will cost. That makes it difficult to figure out just how reasonable the ATS Coupe will be relative to its challengers, but so far, the value equation looks to be in the car's favor. Just like the Oscars, Green Car Journal decided a few years ago to up the number of nominees for its annual award. For the annual "Green Car of the Year" award, given out at the Los Angeles Auto Show each year, there are five finalists. For the "Green Car Technology" award, there are a fantastic ten. At the 2014 Washington Auto Show today, the Cadillac ELR and its regen on demand brakes managed to beat out the nine other finalists to claim the second annual "Green Car Technology" award. What is the purpose of the "Green Car Technology" award? Green Car Journal says it wants to reward "technologies that enable significantly improved environmental performance in vehicles today," which is why only fuel-saving technologies that were "in use on American highways during the award year" can be considered. The Caddy's brakes beat out the Acura Sport Hybrid SH-AWD powertrain, the Audi 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine, the BMW carbon-fiber passenger shell from the i3, the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine used by Ford, the plug-in hybrid powertrain in the Honda Accord, Hyundai's hydrogen fuel cell technology, the regenerative brakes in the Mazda i-ELOOP, the plug-in hybrid powertrain used in some Porsche models and, finally, the Ram 3.0-Liter EcoDiesel engine.
