Up for bid is a 1979 Cadillac Le Cabriolet with 89k miles showing and I'm sure that's first time around based on history and driveability. This is a two owner car - first in Florida from new until '91, second until now. As you probably know, these cut Coupe de Ville rear wheel drive RWD cars were sold new at Cadillac dealers and built by Hess and Eisenhardt, the famous coachbuilder that also built the downsized 80's ElDorado and Riviera FWD convertibles. Depending on what you read on the internet, only 50-100 were built.

This is totally NOT a restored car. It's a daily driver with good paint, great body, solid underside, nice driving car that turns heads. It will not pass any Concours scrutiny, but will attract more attention at a stoplight than the 911 next to you. Body and undercarriage are solid as seen in pics. 425 Cadillac 4bbl V8
engine runs GREAT. TH400 transmission shifts great, too. Well equipped with power everything, most of which works, and cold a/c. Car was not driven regularly since 91 and has lots of new parts in getting her back on the road noted below. Was garage kept, so no water damage inside car.

NO RESERVE.

Questions? Click "ask seller a question" or call Fred at 315-246-0612. Please allow time for a response as I work 8-5 at a regular job in Charleston.
Car available for showing in Mt. Pleasant after 6:30 pm weekdays or any time weekends by appointment.

Condition Report

ENGINE: Runs on all eight cylinders without smoking, missing or knocking. Engine runs at proper temperature. Newer battery & starter & alternator & radiator & hoses & gas tank & fuel pump & fuel filter & oil & oil filter. Starts easy and runs strong; idles smoothly at warmup. Has a very slight lifter tick that I'm confident will go away completely with regular driving.

TRANSMISSION: Performs beautifully. Engages gears quickly and shifts through all forward gears and reverse with good downshift and torque converter performance. Clean fluid with no burn odors. Shift indicator does not move with gear selector.

EXTERIOR: Body: Body is in good shape with no major dents or dings. Has one repaint  done decently but not perfect - see pics for minor imperfections pointed out. There is NO BONDO on the body except a few spots on the hood - no quarter or fender rot. Some minor bubbles under door lips as pictured
. Other: Convertible top in good shape with one small patch as pictured (about 1/2 inch.) Aftermarket top with plastic back window, but I have the original glass back window with defroster if you want to install in heat sealed in a new curtain. Undercarriage is very nice  - see the pics - no rot and only minor surface rust in a few spots. Factory undercoating mostly intact. Underhood sheet metal, trunk lip and door jambs have no rust as seen in pics. Bumpers are nice and shiny with no pitting or rust. Trunk floor is nice - no rust under mat. Sports later model aluminum Brougham wheels that look right on the car.

INTERIOR: Interior of the car is very nice. Front seats are not correct, rear seat covers not correct but seat frames/foam underneath ARE correct. Front seats are Coupe de Ville seats anyway, so if you really have to have correct seats, you can find from a CDV. Driver's armrest has a tear, right rear armrest has a crack but other interior components are in nice shape. Carpet nice but gathers/wrinkles near hump. No cracks on dash, no headliner on convertible top.

ELECTRICAL STUFF: All inspection items work (lights, horn, wipers, etc.) Power windows work correctly from all switches but occasionally need to tug on main switch to make all work. Heat works, a/c works, fan works! Has an aftermarket CD/radio that works great. Power antenna and cruise do not work. Power seats both work but slower than I'd like. Power locks click but only passenger side moves. Trunk release works fine.

DRIVEABILITY: Drives out nicely and steering is remarkably tight for one of these behemoths. Alignment is good, suspension is good, shocks are not bouncy. Brakes work well with good linings. Tires have about 50% tread remaining on a matched set of whitewall radials. Solid, quiet exhaust with no leaks. Drives out beautifully - I would not be afraid to drive it a long distance, but as with any old car, I'd bring a tool set
.

Short version terms: Small non-refundable deposit as listed (but fast) by Paypal within 24 hours. Balance due in 5 days by cash in person, wire transfer, or Wells Fargo cashier's check. Chip Foose is bringing life to a Cadillac sketch from 1935

Sun, Aug 7 2016

General Motors, automotive home of Harley Earl, was a pioneer in the early days of car design. But for as many wild concept cars and even production cars as the company's studio created, there were still many that never got off the paper. Chip Foose is working to change the fate of one of those designs. According to Foose Design, Chip Foose's latest project is based on a sketch from 1935. Car dealer Wes Rydell and his wife Vivian commissioned a custom Cadillac coupe that was sketched out by GM designer Art Ross. It would take an existing Cadillac sedan, shorten it, lower it and give it a removable hardtop. The drawing is as far as the project got. Now Chip Foose is working on realizing the design in real life using a 1939 Cadillac Series 60 Sedan. He plans to follow the initial design brief, but with his own unique touches. He has also named the project "Madam X" in honor of what Harley Earl would call client projects. It is scheduled to be finished and ready for unveiling at the end of the summer. Foose is a well-known designer who has won some of America's most prestigious custom car awards such as the Ridler Award and designed vehicles for the TV show Overhaulin'. The final product should be quite a striking machine. You can see how it's coming along, as well as Foose's sketch of what the car will finally look like, in the gallery above. The syrupy sweet tale of the Pink Cadillac Margarita

Thu, Mar 23 2017

In our last installment of the irregular and irreverent series on drinks loosely connected to – or named after – automobiles, we sipped a Taxi cocktail, which in its original form tasted a bit like a margarita infused with Blackjack chewing gum , except worse. This time, we explore mythos behind a drink so pink it usually doesn't make you stop and think. But that's what we're going to do. And, as always, enjoy cocktails (and reading about them) while you're not behind the wheel. Our brother lives in Detroit, where old American cars go to not die. On the streets of the Motor City, you will see all manner of holey-mufflered, salt-rotted, spring-sagging Big Three iron plowing along shoddily. Our brother's next-door neighbor is a connoisseur of such vehicles, and thus populates his driveway with a cache of Malaise Era Cadillacs. (His dog lives in one.) His latest addition, which our brother texted us a photo of recently while we were eating fish tacos in Los Angeles, is a Desert Rose 1977 Coupe DeVille (seen below). Since we're always thinking about cars or drinking (or both), and we were eating Mexican, this put us in mind of a cocktail our cousin's trashy bridesmaid made us try at her wedding in Charleston: the Pink Cadillac Margarita. Suddenly, we were thirsty. The Pink Cadillac Margarita is, quite obviously, a pink drink – a somewhat cloying, if deliciously chuggable concoction colored with a spritz of Ocean Spray, or Chambord liqueur if you're classy. Pink drinks get a bum rap. Blame it on the Cosmopolitan, and everyday misogyny, but many people find pink drinks frivolous. As expert drinkers, and drink experts, we would counter that the consumption of alcohol is, at its essence, about being frivolous. Never mind that the chemical is a depressive; Consuming it is about putting on your rose (or rose) colored glasses, and getting ready to make some mistakes. The Pink Cadillac is apparently so named not just because of its signature color and the irresistible musical connection between Cadillacs and pinkness (see: Aretha, Springstein, Natalie Cole). The moniker also derives from the quality of the ingredients – drawing on the historical expression "The Cadillac of..." to signify something top-shelf. "It's difficult to know quite how that name was derived," says Melody Lee, Cadillac's director of brand strategy.

eBay Find of the Day: Ryan Gosling Eldorado from Lost River

Thu, Apr 9 2015

What's better than a car connected to Ryan Gosling? A car connected to Ryan Gosling and Matt Smith (the eleventh Doctor Who for our less nerdy readers). This 1966 Cadillac Eldorado convertible is driven by Smith in Lost River, Gosling's directorial debut. The movie was filmed in Detroit, with plenty of footage at the Packard factory, and the car is located in the nearby enclave of Hamtramck. Truth be told, this car has questionable star appeal and it needs a lot of work. Lost River currently holds a 20% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. I've never seen an episode of any Doctor Who – a fact that amazes Seyth Miersma. And while I agree with Kroll Show character Wendell Shawn that Gosling is a "beautiful idiot," that's not enough for me to buy a car with an exhaust leak. The body on this Eldorado looks clean, but there is plenty of restoration work for the next owner. The listing states that most of the exterior and trim needs to be installed, and the front seats are in rough shape. Other details are vague – the carburetor "might need to be rebuilt" and the radiator and fan "may need to be replaced" but neither statements explain why. On the upside, the 340 horsepower (gross rating), 429 cubic inch V8 runs well. Reserve is not met at the current price of $4,000, but this could be a chance to get a classic '60's convertible for cheap.
